.22 hornet
Hey does anyone have any experience witha .22 hornet? i just got one from my grandad and shot it a few times and it seems pretty accurate and that it would be a good shorter range small varmint gun.

RE: .22 hornet
seems to me like its dying off in popularity (at least around here) smaller case capacity and velocity than the 22-250, 220 swift, and 223. Its a neat little gun if one is given to you, however when selecting a varmit rifle most guys choose one of the 3 I listed above.

I have shot a few. I really like em. In between a .223 and a .22 rimfire magnum. Bad part is hard to reload. Easy to crush the thin case.

I have 2 k-Hornets, both built on martini actions. One is a heavy bench rifle and the other is a small light sporter. Both are extremely accurate and are deadly out to 200 yds. I have taken everything from beaver to fox with no problems. If you live near a city or town, it's a quiet rifle to shoot.
Take it out and try it on varmints, i think you will enjoy it. |
RE: .22 hornet
I got one in an NEF earlier this year . Any centerfire is legal for deer here in Texas. I took a 160 lb 11 pointer with it at 15 yds, shot him in the neck and dropped him, I also took a 100 lb doe at 70 yds with a shot to the neck also, dropped her as well.
I shot some rabbits with it and it just blew them to pieces, way to big for rabbit or squirrel. It makes 4/5 the power of a .222 with 1/2 the powder. Shells are a little high, flatter shooting than the .17 HMR and tons more power with a lot bigger bullet. I like it. Oh I took a 40 lb pg with it at 40 yds with a body shot and he dropped also. Shot a 4 x 4 fence post with it and it blew clean through it. I use the rem 45 gr Hollow points. |

RE: .22 hornet
The Hornet is a good varmint caliber out to 200 yards depending on the ammo you shoot. If you are going to shoot consistently at 200 then look to the new 34 gr. ballistic tip load on the market. If you are going to keep your shots at 150 or under the standard 45 gr. loads from Winchester & Remington will take coyotes, crows, & about any other varmint you choose to hunt. I know of people taking deer with the Hornet but it isn't a reliable deer caliber and I wouldn't use it. In most areas it isn't legal anyway.

mossy, the k is kinda like an ackley. straightened the case and maybe different shoulders. You can shoot 22hornet in a k gun to fireform.
