What barrel length should I get?

Ok, I have narrowed down my next gun purchase to a Ruger Super Redhawk in .44 mag. I see there is 2 choices in barrel length, 7.5 and 9.5. I realize that you probably get higher velocity with the longer barrel, but is there any other advantages? I will be using this gun for strictly deer hunting so will the smaller barrel be better for weight/ease of handling or will I loose too much velocity with the shorter barrel? I would prefer the 7.5.

so would i, i don't know what it would do to the ballistics but i would rather have the 7.5 barrel

You won't get the "most" out of .44mag with either barrel...so go with 7.5 if that's what you want

If you are going to use this as a hunting rig then I would opt for the longer barrel. You aren't going to be making lightning quick shots from the hip out of the holster so the shorter barrel will not be a real advantage.

The longer barrel will provide you with more velocity, a slightly stadier aim with the added weight and longer barrel, if you aren't going to scope this gun then the longer sight radius should prove to be more accurate, 4.5 ounces will never be noticed in the holster and that weight can be made back up with a light weight holster.

never thought about the whole balance thing, yeah I guess the longer barrel would be better for that. As of now I dont intend on scoping it, but heck ya never know I may change my mind :Dthanks for your replys guys!!

I myself would get the 9.5 for deer hunting. With 24gr of H110 and a 240gr XTP, you could be kicking 1500fps.

I am probably not going to reload for this, probably use those Federal Vital shocks. they seemed to have the required velocity by the state and bullet construction seemed good for deer.

You can get much more performance by handloading.
