H&R Rifles

I have read many posts here that state the H&R rifle is good and affordable.
I had a Rem 700BDL .270 win and hard times came and had to sell it. I'd like to hunt this season here in Michigan.
My question is has anyone used the H&R in .500 S&W. I'm a reloader so I can keep the cost down. I'm also concerned about the recoil factor. I'm comfined to a wheelchair so its an issue with me. I was also thinking about .270 win, .280 rem or the .308 win. I'd appreciate any info you can pass along.

never fired a 500 smith but I have a .270 and a .45-70 the .270 is like any other .270 as far as I could feel. The .45-70 using standard loads ( suitable for trap door) isn't too bad either ( maybe like a .30 -06)

The design of the H&R will give any most cartridge more recoil. And the 500 will wake you up,especially in your situation. I would stick with the other cal.you mentioned they are proven and will do the job for you. vangunsmith

I have 10 Handi's, put the Choate Varmit stock on my 45-70, really tamed the recoil.

RE: H&R Rifles

I live in lower michigan where we have to use a shotgun. I have a H&R Ultra Slug Deluxe and an inline muzzle loader. I think you would be fine with the 270. Heck, I think you could get away with a .243 if you were really worried about recoil. I think 200 yards and in would be pretty realistic distances and either caliber would work well for that. Either would also work well on coyote and varmints if you wanted.

I would do some checking, my guess would be the .500 S&W would be simular to most of the new slug loads. Might be a better way to go?

I have a H&R 243 and It is a tack driver! A good deer rifle for whitetail. I also have a rem 700 adl and the H&R is at least as accureate. Get one! 200 for the rifle, 60 for a simmons scope. EJ
