700 SPS
I bought a 700 SPS in '06 last winter... the machining quality was exceptional... i know this because i disassembled the rifle, kept the action, bolt, floorplate and mag and sold the rest... i turned it into a custom rifle... I took the time to blueprint the receiver and bolt and everything was dead nuts when indicated in the lathe... the only issue was contact of the bolt lugs... i had to lap those in, but the bolt face was square... the face of the receiver was perpendicular to the receiver bore within .0005...
Now i own 5 700's total... a 700 mountain rifle which was a nightmare... machining quality and tolerances were poorly held... i had to do A TON of work to this gun, including a new barrel (which was the biggest POS from the factory) to get it to even hit the broad side of a barn... the 1990 700 classic is a tack driver and i have done nothing to it, cept shoot it from time to time... all craftsmanship is as to be expected... 700 BDL Target from the late 60's early 70's... chambered in 222 rem... i've taken woodchuck with this gun in excess of 400 yds on 3 occasions...
the 700 CDL i picked up last spring also appears to be a quality rifle.. i have yet to mount a scope or shoot it... the only negative i have from inspection is the presence of the stupid bolt lock...
now the 700 custom i turned the SPS into... with the douglas barrel it's incredibly accurate... i have no issues with it and it's now my primary big game rifle...
so i guess if i look at the track record... my good guns way outweigh the poor... personally i think that Big Green has retooled in the last year or two...
i wouldn't mind something along the lines of an XCR or AWR in 338 or 375 RUM.... why... just cause i can...
all i can say... INSPECT the gun before you buy it.. if you don't like it have em get another out to look at... don't take possession if there are distinct issues... learn to know what to look for...

RE: Remington
I own a number of Remingtons and every one of the 700's the xp-100 the xr-100 and a 541 T. Everyone of them will shoot 1 inch or less the 22-250, 243 7mm-08 can do 1/2 inch and the 280 3/4. The only one I have had problems with is my old 760 30-06 that will oly get about 2 inches. The only real rifles I hav had a problem with and others I know and shoot with have been savage. But have not gave one a try for a few years

RE: Remington
I have had to many 700 Remingtons to even recall. Still waiting for the first problem. I have had old ones and the newer ones. Have not had one that would not shoot one inch or better.
