If you are talking about barrel options other than the 223, it depends on the serial number. All the newer ones will accept any barrels made by H&R-NEF. The best thing to do is to call their customer service and give them the number so they can verify your option. Their phone number and all the info you will need is at www.hr1871.com . Go to the barrel accessory program and check it out. I am a big fan of the NEF rifles. I have several of them and have added several barrels to some of them. The 223 is very accutate. I have had three of them. Two with the bull barrel and one with the standard barrel. I would stay away from the 243 in this rifle. I have had two of them and had extraction problems and pressure problems. All other calibers seem to be fine. They are fixing the case sticking problem with a new mechanical extractor which should once and for all, fix the sticking case problem. Some of the guys have had no problem with the 243 but some have. My favorites are the 44 Mag, 357 Mag and 45-70.

A couple years ago guns an ammo did a varmint rifle shootout , the nef came out on top in accuracy , beating a sako . They must be good . It was the exact rifle you are asking about , a bull barrel 223 .

i am not sure if this is the gun you are talking about. but i havethe h&r ultra varmint in a .223. had the trigger redone and added a 2-1/2 to 10 powertarget scope.i am very happy with it. i can pop clay birds at 300 yards all day long with it. it really likes the pmc 55 grain target loads. also had good luck with the winchester 45 grain hollow point varmint loads. they are the 40 pack in the white box. i just bought a 200 pack of federal 50 grain hollow points but have not tried them yet. i can let you know how they work also. over all pretty nice shooting gun.:)

Mine has a bull barrel (I have the Survivor model) and I like the feel of it.

I'm no great marksman, but mine is pretty accurate out of the box.

I have that rifle in a .243 bull , it is a really nice shooting rifle for 200.00. It will shoot with any I have. I have had one round stick in it but after that all good. Dont be afraid to buy this one its a keeper.

I was going to get one but my friemd had the regular one and it had ejection problems, the case would get stuck and it was a pain to get out, I know a few other people one witha22 hornet had this problem also. I got a Ruger 77 Mk II .223 from walmart for about $460 and it will shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards with my hand loads and winchester factory varmint loads. Ruger is a much better gun IMO.

A friend of mine has one - very accurate. Matter of fact, it's the only varmint rig that will shoot with my Savage. It shot rings around a few customized Remingtons (cryo-treated barrels, aftermarket triggers, etc.)

The trigger on the H&R, however, leaves a lot to be desired, in my honest opinion. Definitely an awesome gun for the dough.
