I prefer the bolt action, but as for rifles it’s which ever fits you the best. Good luck...

I have a 308 in the Browning A Bolt and one in the 700 Remington Classic. I like them both. The A bolt is the synthetic satlker. Its pretty light so it recoils a bit.

I like my Winchester M-70 30-06 better than anything I have ever shot so far:D

I would go with a Ruger M77 Mk II. They are based on the mauser action, and have a 3 position safety. The bases are an intrical partof the action so they can not come loose and Ruger supplies therings with the rifle. They are very accurate,my .223 and 300 WSMwill both shoot 1/2" groups at 100 yards. A;; three groups in the picture are 3 shot groups. The only thing I did to theses rifles was put a Timney trigger on the .223 and did a trigger job on the factory WSM trigger. Rugers cost quite a bit less than most other companies so you can get a trigger job and still have it cost less.

Good luck

I've become addicted to my Savage 110 bolt-action.

For us left-handed guys, choices in bolt guns are limited.

My first choice would be Sako with a close second of the new Remington 700 CDL.

Go with a bolt action my choice is either a Browning, Remington, Winchester, or Tikka.

I like a bolt action rifle best. Suggest you check out the Ruger 77 MkII. It'll probably need some work on the trigger to lighten it up a bit, but the scope rings are supplied so you save a little there. Pretty much an offset I guess.
Another good one is the Remington model 700.
As someone else already noted, check 'em out and pick one that fits your budget, and feels right/fits you best.
Couple other good ones to look into would be Winchester, or for something less expensive (but still good quality) there's Savage rifles.
Good luck.

A good and inexpensive rifle to hunt with is a H&R Handi rifle, single shot. More money, Thompson Encore. If you like bolts, Steven 200, about $265, very accurate. You can't go wrong with a Ruger 77 and the new Winchester Super Shadow, especially in 270WSM. I own all the above, the Handi is the fun gun, the 270WSM is the deadly long range rifle.

I like M1A's myself, but for a good bolt gun I would recommend starting with a Rem 700PSS and working from there, maybe shipping it off to GA Precision for some work or trying out a local smith to see what they can do with it. If I could do it all over again I would buy a Springfield Armory Natl Match instead of the loaded because it comes with a bedded stock and unitized gas system. I think its a matter of preference though, I like the M1A's and other M14 clones. DPMS makes good .308 AR15's also, best price out there for that type of rifle and as accurate as any of them.

I'll second the Remington 700 Classic in .308 - the last of the Classic series if I understand correctly. Really like the clean lines of the Classic!

But then I just bought my wife a Browning A-Bolt Micro-Hunter in .308...and it feels like a dream...I'm jealous!! I'd be finding reasons to use it 'cept she's a lefty....and I'm not....dang!!!

Those brownings are nice, my brother has one in 270. Choose any of the Major manufactuers of bolt actions and you can t go wrong. Im partial to ruger myslef, but havent met a remington 700 or browning or winchester I didnt like. Im using mausers now, building my own with a mauser action and a remington 308 heavy barrel. Its all in what you like.

If your preference or interest is in a lever, then grab a Browning BLR in .308.

I also am interested in a .308 rifle, bolt action. My only problem is that I am left handed. Anyone with ideas on which manufacture would have that setup?

If I were buying a .308 I would go with the Savage tactical model, with the McMillan stock. You aren't going to find a more accurate .308 out of the box I don't believe. Couple that with a nice VXIII and maybe a bipod and you have a fine fine weapon.
