Scope Mount for a Crack barrel .410
 

My six year old will start bringing a .410 crack barrel into the stand this year. My two kids before my six year old had a hard time lining up on a deer with the rifle. My question is, Is there a mount that you can put on one of these crack barrels that would accomodate either a regular scope or a red dot style scope?

Stone I am gonna go out on a limb here and assume that "crackbarrel" is cajunspeak for a break action single shot? :D

If so, then there are plenty of alternatives on the market that would allow you to mount a scope on that "crackbarrel". Most of them are a one piece design that simply bolt atop the barrel (assuming it is tapped) and you then usually mount the scope with a Weaver type set of rings.

Am I remotely close in my dialectual summation of coonspeak?

Stay away from the .410 for deer. Their ballistics are junk.

Most consider 1000 foot pounds of energy the bare minimum for deer. The best slugs I could find for a .410 produced only 760 foot pounds AT THE MUZZLE. Imagine what that energy drops to at 40 yards. Not to mention the fact that a .410 slug (1/5 oz) is barely over 100 grains. 100 grains is fine at 3000 fps, but not at 1200.

I'm a .410 nut, don't get me wrong. (I own7)I think it's the most under-rated caliber for small game. BUT, it has its limitations.

Get him a .45 caliber muzzleloader.

Pro line brings up a good point about the 410 slug, if you're gonna go single shot may aswell go with a muzzle loader that way you can tune the gun to about any load, for my 50 cal ML I have a light load for my wife shes extremely recoil shy the load is plenty potent to take a deer to 75 yards maybe even 100. The load is two 30 grain pyrodex pellets under a bullet/sabot combo i put together its a .451" dia. hornady sabot with a winchester 45 cal. 230 grain notched jacketed hollow point the bullet is actually a 45 acp slug, its designed to expand at pistol velocity so im not worried about expansion problems the load is rather accurate out of my CVA hunter bolt approx. 1 inch groups at 50 yards and 2 inch groups at 100 yards. the recoil is between a 410 3" game load and a 30-30. just food for thought

Thanks for the help guys, I will talk to a gun smith about putting something on it.

As far as usin a .410 for deer? I killed my first deer with one. and so did my two older kids and countless others that I know. Most of the time the deer is shot at close range.

Actuaslly it's about 87 grains and I agree....it's a darn poor load for deer. I occasionally use a M-92 Winchester in .25-20 for deer and it's energy is about 700 ft-lb at the muzzle.....just because I've killed deer with it don't make it a deer rifle. Some states like mine require 900 ft-lb at 100 yards as a legal requirement.....I don't know about your state but nevertheless the 410 is still a underpowered round for deer. Do as you see fit.....

from the way i see it a 410 slug falls between a 357 mag and a 30 carbine ive seen both take deer so why not the 410 slug? besides them cajun deer aint that big anyway.

Guys,

You are right about the deer not being as large in Louisiana as their cousins up North but there are some areas of Louisiana where the Wisconsin strain was released many years ago. Your larger bucks will run around 250 to 300 pounds.

I do not hunt Louisiana anymore. My kids and I hunt in Arkansas and I also have a ranch in Texas that I hunt.

As far as a debate about a .410 being the perfect deer gun.....I didn't say this. My younger kids start on this gun just like I did and they seem to do very well dispatching a doe or buck within a limited range. The limited range is all you are going to let a six year old shoot anyway.

One more thing, I know you guys were brought up thinking that us dem dare cajuns all live in da swamp and ride our pirouqes to school and the only job is to catch dem crawfish but I am here to tell you.....This doesn't happen even in the Atchafalya Basin where there are some old cajuns. But they live on dry ground and in an actual house.

This is a generalization kind of like all rednecks live in a double wide and have a cargrave yard in their front yard.
