Sighting-In Question
 

Hello everyone this is my first post. A friend of mine and I are going Elk and Mule Deer hunting in Colorado in October. We have never been. We recently bought new guns. He bought a Browning BAR Safari .338 and I bought a Browning A-Bolt II .338 Stainless Stalker. Both have Leupold Vari-X III 4.5x14x50 Scopes. We have not shot these guns as of yet. I plan to use Winchester 225 Accubond rounds. I would like to zero the gun in at 300 yards. Here is the question. Does +2.5 or +3.0 sound about right at 100 yards.

I searched winchesters website for ballistics and found the follwing link:

Looks like a +1.8" at 100 yards would give you a drop of -7.4" at 300 yards. Good Luck.

With a BC of 0.549 ,and started out at 2800 fps ( win data not your gun )
You need to sight in 4.2- 4.3" high at 100 to be 5" high at 200 to be 0 at 300

If it was me I would sight it in zero at 200 yds this will leave you 7.4" low at 300 , but only 1.8" high at 100.
Or even better 2.5 " high at 100 this will givr you a zero at about 230 yds and about 5" low at 300.

I have found that most game is shot a less than 300 yds .
AND most people don't practice enough at longer (300-600 yds) to be able to hit the heart lung area every time.

i checked the books and at 3 inches high at 100 yards you will be dead on at 250 yards. hope this helps.

The 3" high at 100 yards is a very common zero for Colorado hunting.

For a cartridge running at that velocity- 2700-2800 fps, the rule of thumb is if zeroed at 100, 2 minutes up for 200, and an additional 3 minutes up for 300.
IMHO, if you want to shoot agme with it at 300 yards, you should also shoot paper at 300 yards first.

Whatever you do be sure to actually check the point of impact at 300 yards as the tables can be off even if you did chronograph the load to determine the actual velocity in your gun.Ring heights also have an effect on the actual bullet path.
