Single Shot Accuracy
 

I was thinking about getting a target/varmit rifle in 22-250, 223, 243. I like the single shots made by NFA, H&R. I was wondering if they are as accurate as a bolt action rifle. Aslo, I have heard there are ways to make the singles shott better can anyone fill me in. Could anyone also offer any ideas on the cal. Thanks

I would suggest checking out the 6mm Rem. An excellent varmint caliber especially for extended shots.

Alright, check it out. I have single shot NEF in 223 and I couldnt get it to group but heres what you got to do. First thing i did was free float the barrel. To do that i took the screw off the forearm that holds the stock to the barrel and put an O ring around the stub thats on the barrel, actually I put a couple on. Then you take the scope mount off and clean out the srew holes real good and use some Lock Tite on the srews when you put them back on. I also used the lock tite on the scope rings to keep the scope in place. That will turn your gun into a real shooter.

A freind and I use H&R Ultra Varmiters in 223 . 2-3 year old

I can get groups real close to the group I get with my Savage 12VSS
But I have done not load work for it ,justed picked a load , it shot .7 at 100 so I keep loading that load.

I had a trigger job done on mine.

My freind uses Federal AE 223G and gets .6-.7 groups

IMO get one with a clean trigger or have a trigger job done and they are real shooters.

I've got a Ruger #1 in .22-.250 and I took it to the range a couple of weeks ago after giving it a thorough cleaning. The last group I shot was 5/8" at 100 yards with factory loaded PSP Rem. 55 grain. One of the best groups I've ever shot!!

6mm (.243) SUX as a varmit rifle. 22-250 and 220swift better for it. the only thing the 6mm aka 243 has is a slightly heavier bullet to help with cuting the wind. if you not in heavy windy areas, and making 100+ yard shots get 22-250 or 220swift. my 22-250 fire winchester 45gr at 4000fps, so the box says.

With a bit of home tinkering the NEF rifles will shoot under an inch no problem. Not bad for a 200 dollar gun brand new. The Ultra 24 inch bull barrel will run about 270.00. They make it in 22-250 as well.

I was thinking about this more and I think that the 243 would be a good choice. I want a single shot for a utility rifle or back up. If my savage whelen should malfunction I would like a back up. I could use the the lighter weight bullets for varments and use to 100 grainers for deer. I'm not intending to start another .243 post partIII, but I think this cal is the logical choice for what I need. What do you guys and gals think? Thanks

sounds pretty logical if you want it for varmits and deer. if you just wanted it for varmits though i would recommend the 22-250. it's a great flat shooting cartridge... if you really want to you can hunt deer with it. i know people that have used it on big kentucky deer. but that's your own choice.

Why exactly would a 243 suck as a varmint rifle?
