Cleaning solvents

Hi everyone,

I'm curious to see what everyone uses as far as cleaning solvents for their guns.
And I mean all of them, solvents, oils, sprays, magic stuff, etc...

Lets hear it! What's the best out there?

I use Shooter's Choice for regular bore cleaning. Sweet's 7.62 for more subborn application. Barnes CR-10 for really serious copper removal. Use Break Free for lube. Gun Scrubber for light cleaning of gunk. Anything more serious goes in the solvent tank.

my chemicals of choice currently are:

M-Pro7/Hoppe's Elite
Outer's Foaming Bore Cleaner
Barnes CR-10 or Sweet's 7.62 for stubborn copper fouling
FP-10 for CLP & lube purposes
Tetra grease for those parts that need grease

And for blackpowder cleaning, I use a 50/50 mix of Simple Green & water.

Breakfree CLP
Gun Scrubber

RE: Cleaning solvents

Hoppe's No. 9 for general cleaning
Sweet's 7.62 for copper fouling, followed by Hoppes to prevent bore damage
Hoppe's oil soaked on a patch through the bore after all of the above
Rem Oil on the sliding contact areas of my semi-auto pistols

Honorable mentions go to Shooter's Choice Copper Remover, and especially to Birchwood Casey's 2 in 1 Bore Cleaner, which removes copper and nitro fouling. Sadly, I have not seen 2 in 1 for sale in a long time; I imagine it has been discontinued.:(

Here's a list of what I've used at one time or another. I put a star (*) by the ones I still use. As you can tell, I like to experiment.

Hoppes #9
Hoppes copper solvent
Shooter's Choice *
Kroil *
Break Free CLP *
Butch's Bore Shine
Butch's gun oil *
Bore Tech Bench Rest blend
Bore Tech Rim Fire blend *
TM Solution * (sold onlyby SinclairInt'l as far as I know)
MPro-7 *
JB Paste *
Sweets 7.62
Barnes CR-10 *
WipeOut *
Birchwood Casey Gun Scrubber *

I think there have been some others, but I can't remember them offhand. One I really want to try is Hunter's Exteme Copper Melt. The company's had some problems lately and supplies are almost nonexistent, but I think they're getting back on they feet now (demand far outstripped their ability to produce it I believe, which caused some major problems for them) and I want to try some when I can find it. They talk very highly of it over at longrangehunting.com.

Slamfire 06-21-2005 09:30 PM

RE: Cleaning solvents

I'll second the Foul out for metal fouling. Hoppe's # 9 for power fouling (just because of the smell) and whatever light oil I bought last.[8D]

Just tried some 50BMG this past month and it works really well so far.It is pretty strong and it works pretty fast.
It is made by Montana Extreme, and what I understand it has good reviews in some of the shooting and hunting mags

RE: Cleaning solvents

I bought some Tetra Gun Copper solvent about 5 years ago and now its all I ever use. Copper Solvent stinks but really cleans up copper and sabot/plastic residue in my Smoke Poles. I bought all there lubes, grease and started using it on all my fishing reels. Great stuff.

coppermelt man 07-12-2011 11:03 PM

I am in contact with the original owner/Inventor of coppermelt. He has for some reason or other been running undercover.

If anyone has an interest in using coppermelt, I'm sure we can get some bottles out to you. Apparently, the product works like a charm,as i have been told, but production has suffered and supply is almost non existant. I do not know the formula, nor want to, so please be aware of this. i am only a go between for the time being.

pm me, and I will see what I can do for you.

Thanks

Coppermelt Man,

How well do you know the original owner/Inventor of coppermelt ?

"Apparently, the product works like a charm......."

Who & how many people have you heard this from ?

country1 07-13-2011 06:38 PM

Pushing the product hard for a supply that is almost non-existent.
