Default Need some advice.

I have a bad knee and had surgery just under 2 years ago. well i end up with arthritis in my knee from the surgery or damage not sure which. Well last winter i fell on my right shoulder and being a big guy it hurt like crap.
I have been in pain for a year now. My doctor has gave me cort. shots in my shoulder plus one in my butt (why i have no idea). It still hurts. Even more so since i had to stop taking the large amonth of vicodon so i can hunt. Even with the pain pills it hurts. heck even they help my knee.
It has gotten to where it hurts if i sit in the car with my arm up on the seat next to me.
I am to the point where i need to go to a crossbow so i can bow hunt.
Here is my issue. I like my doctor he cares alot and is not one of the doctors who says it hurts lets cut on it. Infact he is just the other way. He holds off on the costly and painfull surgerys and test. But at this point my shoulder has hurt for a year and no XRAY no MRI he just feels it and says it will stop it is just some tendanitis. Well a year later still hurts even worst most of the time. He says it is because i am bow hunting and pulling my bow so much. I guess he know body builders who has the same pain when they lift.

Put it even hurts into my neck and my other shoulder.

Should i ask for a xray or mri or just let him do what he thinks is best.
I figured i would ask here since most of you deal with pain and doctors on a normal basis.
Thanks alot guys good hunting.

If I were in your position, I would look for another doctor. Whatever your guy is trying is just not working for you....might be ok for someone else, but, a second or third opinion is something you should seriously consider.

I was thinking that today. I think the next time i go in i will ask for a mri and or an xray. Then see what he says or the mri says. maybe he is just right and it is one of those things you have to deal with.
But i know i do not want to give up my compound for a crossbow. I could get the permit to hunt yearround with the crossbow but i like the bow. We will see i guess.

First there's one simple question that I have for ya and that is "what type of doctor is he?". The reason I ask is that you're average family practitioner may not be able to give the same insight that an orthopedic specialist would be able to and it sounds like that is the type of doctor that you need to be seeing.

The thing that sounds really fishy about this guy is that you have been injured for this long and no MRI, surgery, or physical therapy have been prescribed to give you more insight into the problem. You didn't say anything about physical therapy so I assume nothing has been brought up about it and that is really how you will stop the pain. The first thing that should be done is to find out what the route of the problem is solve that and if there has not been an MRI then there is really no way to know what the extent of your injury really is. Giving you vicotine and cort shots will make you feel better in short run but they don't help you get a rehabilitated state with your shoulder or knee and it sounds like that is what your wanting. So my first suggestion is that you do get the MRI and talk to someone who deals with these types of injuries on a daily basis. If you don't like advice then go get a second opinion.

I was in your position a bit over a year ago. I went through the drugs, the shots the physical therapy, you name it. X-rays and an MRI told the tale. I had arthritis so bad in the shoulder joint that it was bone on bone. In about a week it will be one year since I had shoulder replacement surgery. It was tough and it hurt....alot...but after about 7 or 8 months I'm very glad I had it done. If I were you I'd see a bone Doctor and ask for X-rays and MRI.

Always get a second opinion and wouldn't hurt to go see a sports dr. I didn't trust my first dr's opinion and went for a second and found out i had cancer. Never hurts to seek another opinion. I also had a tear in my shoulder cuff and had to put off my trad. bows for several years but now i can pull them in moderation. Six weeks after a 11 hr surgery i shot my biggest deer with a crossbow. You do what you have to keep hunting.

Ya i went Wednesday and he told me i need to do therapy before any surgery. I almost **** my self. Guess it is more for insurance then healing. My hope is when the therapy fails or if it does he will do a MRI then send me to a surgeon. My plan is a second opinion. I properly will not get surgery unless it is a must.
