RE: Official "Lung Busters" (5) Thread
I've seen a few small bucks, but nothing worth shooting IMO. I had some back probs that kept my hunting to a minimum the last 2 weeks, after helping my cousin drag out his first ever deer! A 4pt, with a bow. It was the first shot he's ever taken at a deer! Muzzy right through both shoulders. Deer dropped in eyesight. It was awesome to be with him for his first deer. I went to a chiropractor for the first time ever today. Boy she put a whooping on me! My back is messed up but nothing enough to keep me completely out of the woods. I've just got to take it easier. Come to find out, I've got scoliosis, upper, middle and extreme lower verterbrae probs. On the bright side, there's about 3 vertebrae that are OK though.;)

Hope your back gets better. Threw mine out last year during bow season and that put a big damper on my hunting for almost a month. I get to hunt till 10 tomorrow before having to go to work. Leaving the 270 at home. Have a spot in mind that shouldn't be too bad for bow. Hunting on the ground. Seen a couple nice bucks to the NE of this area but not sure if they come this far south to bed. Plan on getting out a couple hours before first light. Will run a drag line since they are talking SW wind and hope to draw them down to my spot. Probably will rattle a little bit and use a doe call. Should be interesting and chilly. Talking single digits for the morning. Tim |

Still alive here!! No landlord, friends or brother-in-law to deal with for the next 5 days of hunting on my week off. Got the perfect wind for tomorrow for a good spot. Life is looking good again especially in the hunting department. Only one hickup that possibly could happen. We might have a POed farmer right south of where I am hunting. Guy might be a little hot under the collar in the morning. He best not wreck my hunt!!! We have given him his last subtle hint to stay off our land. Had to get a little nasty with him. He has been driving all over the boss's land instead of driving down the trail on the section line like he is suppose to get to his land. He tried posting some of the boss's land in his name. He tried to block trail on the section line so no one could drive down to his land. We fixed that and boy won't he be surprise to see what a payloader can do to stop unwanted jerks from driving on our land should he decide to drive on it now. He has done wore out his welcome!!! He will figure out in no short order.... we got bigger toys and balls then he does and we will enjoy making his life miserable!!!! Next spring when his section line goes under water from runoff and he " needs " to drive on the boss's land, he will not get back there to farm it. The boy is " Sh!t out of luck ". Gotta love " good " nieghbors!! ;) :D

Well, the early season has come and gone here in Nebraska and I had a disappointing season in the aspect of bagging a buck, but it was satisfying to be out and see the number of large bucks that I saw. The prognosis for many of them making it through the season and being even bigger next year is good as well. A piece of property next to us that was hunted heavy in rifle season two years ago does not look like it is being hunted at all this season. It wasn't hunted heavy last year either and the number of large bucks I saw this year may be a testament to that.
However, the big boys eluded me this year. I still have the late season, but we're in the rifle season right now and I won't have a chance to get back in the woods until the second weekend after Thanksgiving. There are a couple of nice ones running around right now, but I don't know if they will be after the rut. |

Don't give up, late season is a good time to bag a buck. They still are interested in does that come in late but the best way to hunt them is at a good food source. They will be trying to build up their fat reserves for winter that they have depleted from rut. I have been hunting but not seeing anything big with bow. With 3 days left to fill my rifle tag, I went out tonight with the 270. This area is hard to get in to bow hunt. It is a big bedding area and the bucks don't leave it till dark but do wander around in it during the day. Passed a 70 yard standing broadside shot on a very nice 6 pt. Kicking myself for doing such a dumb thing but would really like to get him with bow once rifle season is over or the next couple nights if the wind is right. He is in an area only I have permission for so hoping he doesn't wander in the next couple days. Probably live to regret it but this buck is only 4.5 years old at best and actually would love to see him get another year. He is a 150 Class buck now. I will take him with bow if I can get him within 30 yards but it will be tough to do. Tomorrow I will be bowhunting for sure in the morning in a different area. I might just camp out all day if I see a lot deer moving in the morning in this area. If not and it sounds like the wind will be right, I will go after the 6 pt with bow. After watching him work the bedding area this afternoon, I have a plan. Just hope my plan doesn't call for tag soup by Sunday night. :D Tim |

My god were the bucks running this morning. Wind wasn't the best so I back off from were I planned to hunt this morning. I did see 5 bucks in this area that I want to hunt but that was no help to me were I was at. Saw two more buck on the way home searching for does. Hopefully the wind switches to the NW like they are talking for tomorrow morning. With that wind I can get right in there as the does are going through that spot keeping the bucks there.
The wind is suppose to switch this afternoon and I need that to hunt the 6 pt tonight. Got my fingers cross it switches soon so I can get in there in the next couple hours. Colder weather is setting in now. It was quite a sight to see all the frosty backed bucks running this morning. Time to arrow one of them as it doesn't get any better then now!! Tim |

I'm still on the hunt....seen a lot of does and small buck's. I know I said I was going to take a small buck or any buck for that matter...but I can't get myself to shoot a small fork horn or 6pt yet. Gun season start's monday and run's for two weeks then bow season return's to close out the year with a doe season and muzzleloader mixed in.
One way or another I'll take a buck to add to the team. I'm not sure what it will be, but I'm not going to put up a 0. It might be the smallest entered, but I will put up something. |

Was a big change of plans this afternoon. Wind didn't switch and found out my brother-in-law was coming to hunt for his doe this weekend. I promised I would help him as he is new to hunting. Unless he shoots one tomorrow, no buck hunting for me with bow this weekend.
Since the wind didn't switch and was no good for my bow spots that haven't been tromped but rifle hunters, I grabbed the 270 and hit some really open areas. Found two bucks standing over a doe that wouldn't get up for them. She just layed on the ground. After stalking them for an hour and having a 3rd buck come slinking by me at about 20 yards, I ran out of cover but had closed the gap to 80 yards. Guesstimated the bigger buck to go 140 and shot him when he turn giving me a slight quartering to shot. He dropped like a rock. Would have been very close on my guesstimate but he had one busted tine. Still a very good buck and was quite please with him and the stalk. That was fun as always. The 270 get cleaned and put away now. Will carry the bow but not really looking like I will get to do any serious buck hunting till next weekend. ![]() |
