Season ends here around the end of the month or so and then opens again toward the last half of december, after the rifle hunters create the havoc here in Kansas. How about all of your seasons? I've read a couple in the previous posts already.

Any new updates? I've been seeing ALOT of good bucks around now that the rut is in full swing and archery season is over.[:@][:@] PA is so screwed up. They want us to take out all these deer but won't let us hunt during the peak of the rut. Big Country should be back form Illinois. Hopefully he'll put us on the board. We're only 1 of 2 teams that haven't scored yet. Good luck to everyone. Our gun season opens up on Monday.

hey guys, sorry I haven't posted in a while. We turned off the internet at the house since we pay all these tech. fees at OU. I shot a doe on thursday night and my buddy shot one on friday morning. I have seen a couple good bucks but haven't had any good opportunities. I haven't been able to get back to my property in NW oklahoma yet, we still have almost 2 full months of season left, so I'm not too worried yet. Anyway, good luck.

Well guys, I am sorry to report that I have not helped our cause yet.

For the first time in probably 15 years I hit a buck and did not get him![:@]

He was only in the 180-190 class anyhow.

The good thing is........he is still walking, and I will go back for another 7-10 days after Christmas for round # 2.

Deer902, I have a short video clip of the buck I hit, we will have to get together so you can see just how bad I messed up!!!

I saw this buck very early in my hunt, and I passed on bucks up to 150" waiting for a crack at this guy. I had my chance, and I just blew it!

I hit him too far forward. He is still definately alive, I saw him four more times over the next week before I came home, and nobody caught him off my farm during gun season.....so I am going back after him.

We can still rack up some points guys....it ain`t over yet!!!

Sorry to hear that BC. He was ONLY 180-190 class anyways. You should of let him grow up.:D Do you have the video on your digital camera? Is it possible to email it? I'd love to see it. Good luck on getting him when you go back. Are you headed out for PA gun season next week?

Big Country 11-23-2004 01:26 PM

RE: Official Team "Non-Typical" (3) Thread

Bob, no digital video. My buddy caught him on a regular VHS tape at about 40 yards.

My videoing everything cost me a wide open shot at this buck on November 7th! He walked right past me in the open at 15 yards, but I had hung up my bow and turned around to video a 135" ten point when this big guy walked right in front of my stand.

I already hung stands for gun season, but I just cannot bring myself to carry the rifle. I will be using a bow next monday. Anything over 125" is fair game.

Good luck next week, and we will meet up to watch the tape of the big one.

Sorry to hear that big country... Hope you can get one. I'll be out some more this year, so don't rule me out.. :) This is the last weekend because rifle season and unfortunately I'm not sure if I'll be able to get out. But we'll see.

Also, I got some cool video of when my buddy and I walked up on his big Mule Deer during the night. It looks kind of like a blair witch project video, and was tough to focus since it was night time, but it is pretty cool. I can send it to ya guys if you want, just let me know you email addresses.

Yeah KS, send it to me [email protected] Mitch, I know what you mean about carrying a gun to hunt with. It's almost like cheating. I have my camera set up on a scrape that is (no lie) 8 feet around. I've had more than a couple people tell my brother in law and I about this huge buck that they see at night in the area. I'm going to set up about 50 yards down wind of this scrape for Monday nd hope for the best. I'm going to pick up my camera on Friday and develop the film over the weekend. I'm hoping he's on there and then I can get REAL excited about first day. Let me know when you want yo get together to watch the film and shoot around a little.

Sorry to hear that big country. You must have been pretty upset. Hope you get another shot at him. Also, if you shoot a buck with your bow during gun season, it still counts right? I'll be out this weekend so I'll update on monday.

Well, my buddy and I have been hunting this spot pretty hard in the past 3 weeks. About everytime we go out we see some nice bucks. On Thanksgiving morning my buddy watched a non-typical at 50 yards for a while that had 15 points and a small 3" droptine, and another bigger-frame buck behind him.

I'm heading out tomarrow for the opening day of rifle season. I'm not going to hunt with the rifle but my girlfriend will. She's never shot at a deer in her life but I think we have some good chances at seeing one of those big bucks. And I know the gun can reach out there a ways, as long as she can hit it. So I guess we'll see. I'm saving one of my spots and am not going to hunt it with the rifle, so that once bowseason comes back here in a couple weeks, the deer won't be spooked. I'll keep you guys all updated.

Hi Guys,

Sorry its been awhile since last post. No luck in Illinois this year.
I did shoot a 5 point with my bow on the first evening of PA rifle season 11/29.
I took him right near my house and you can't hunt with a rifle because of the 150 yard from any building regulation. The archery regulation is only 50 yards, so I decided to use my bow because I seen a real nice 8 point there Sunday Morning. Didn't see him so I took this 5 point. I know it isn't much in the way of scorable points but since I only harvested 2 does in Illinois this year it was time to take a buck. I will get his score when I pick it up from the butcher.
Scott

Yeah, We're on the board! Congratulations! What to go Dmax. Now the rest of us need to contribute too. I shot a doe today with my gun. 3rd doe of the year. My wife is ticked off. So maybe its time to hold out for a buck. I'll be back in a tree stand after Christmas with my bow in hand. Good luck to all. And congrats again.

WOOHOO congrats DMAX. When I get off for christmas break, I'll have from Dec. 16 til Jan. 15 to hunt whenever I feel like it. Hopefully I can catch the second rut.

Congrats DMAX. It's good to have some points up.

Yesterday evening, I took my girlfriend out hunting. She has never shot a rifle in her life and unfortunately we didn't have time to practice before the hunt, but we did practice holding and looking through it. One of my hunting spots has with a lot of nice bucks which always seem to stay right out of range of my bow so far.

So yesterday, we watched a group of deer out in the middle, and after a few minutes of watching one good buck, she had the one she wanted at about 150 yards. She pulled the trigger and my .308 target rifle dropped him. He is about 18-19" wide, with about 11-12" tines, 8 pt. frame with a kicker on the right burr, and a broken-kicker on the left G-2. It's not a monster but deffinately a great deer for a first deer and first animal kill ever. I've never seen her so excited in her life, and she says she can't wait for January to go shoot a doe. She said she finally realized why I'm so hooked, and couldn't beleive the rush she had, with her heart pounding a hundred miles a minute. It was probably the best hunt of the year. I'll put some pictures up in a day or 2, once I get them loaded.

Hi Guys sorry it has been so long, just have a lot going on right now! Big Country - sorry to hear about your buck. We had a similar thing (my bro) 180 - 185 at 7 yards (steep angle in the stand) put the arrow exactly where it should be...good looking blood on the arrow - watched the deer for 40 minutes, walked up a hill - good trail with several puddles. went over the hill and vanished. The only thing I could figure was with the angle it deflected straight down from a rib (was shooting a spitfire).

dmax - congrats - it is good to get on the board!

ks - could you send me a copy of your video [email protected] tell your gal congrats on a dandy!

I have shot one doe so far, have not seen bubba yet this year, but have seen a hawg 4 different times - 19 - 20 inside spread, 18 point and I think most of the tines will be about 10 in but the really neat thing is how heavy it is. We put the blaze orange sneak on him going home from pheasant hunting one evening after watching him for 5 minutes.

After shot gun season ends I will get back out in a tree!

Good luck to all - Mike

Nice deer KS, havn't seen anything close to that around here yet but looks like the bucks are starting to move again, things have been dead around here for six weeks. Screwed up weather to blame I think. Nobody's seeing anything in this area but I watched a 120" class 8 pointer last night at a friends house, around 7:00 PM. It would be a nice little shooter if it will cross into Wisconsin and move 2 miles upstream.
I only have a few more weekends to sit so I sure hope something happens soon, good luck to all and see you later.

RE: Official Team "Non-Typical" (3) Thread

Guys, yesterday I went out hunting for the first time since the 1st season, before rifle season at a stop that the rifle hunters never got to this year, and has been hardly hunted this year. With the wind chill the weather was in single digits.

The first deer that entered the field was a small buck, which walked almost directly below my stand, which I passed on. Then I watched as 3 does entered into the Milo field and then followed by the monster buck of my dreams. I can say with confidence that this buck is the biggest typical whitetail that I have ever seen in the wild. The frame on this buck almost instantly reminded me of the "Barbwire Buck" that Bill Jordan missed, if any of you have seen that video. I'm used to seeing 120-150 class bucks, but seeing anything much bigger doesn't happen too often. Just a Magnificent buck with several tines over 12-15" tall, great width and was easy to see good mass, just a monster.

After the buck came out, 4 more does followed him. They were out at about 100 yards looking at something in the opposite direction, probably a coon or coyote or something. The does start heading my way and my heart starts pounding. Then all of the sudden the buck turns and heads of the other corner of the field, and walking away. I tried grunting, but with the 25 mph Kansas wind he never heard it.

Unfortunately I wasn't able to get out and hunt in the evening since I had a X-mas get-together and my grandfather is terminally ill with brain cancer and I didn't want to miss it for hunting. I have Thursday-Sunday off from work, so on Wednesday night I'm driving back and hunting. I checked the weather and high in the afternoon is supposed to be in the teens, and with the wind it should be around 0, if not colder. But with a buck of that caliber, I have to be out there. I moved a stand to a better spot, so I getting really anxious for Thursday.

Go get'm KS. Sounds like a buck of a lifetime. Sorry to hear about your grandfather, our prayers are with you. I took a walk tis morning and saw alot of tracks in the snow, but no buck prints. I'll be back out the Monday after Christmas. Good luck to everyone and Happy Holidays.

I'll be out tomarrow morning. A chance of snow, high of 13 in the afternoon, and 15-20 mph winds. My stand is on the corner of an open field, and up higher than normal. But even though it'll be 10-20 below with wind chill tomarrow, I'm really really anxious to get out there and after that big boy. I'll keep you all posted. I have a 2 1/2 days of doing nothing but bowhunting, without any destractions or anything. Good luck to anyone else still hunting.

I went out this morning, and saw 2 small bucks and a descent 8 ptr, but they weren't the one I wanted. I was suprised to see the 8ptr. chasing the does around in circles with his nose an inch off the ground. Looks like the 2nd rut is in full swing. I haven't hunted this spot in the evening yet, this whole year, so I'm not sure what to expect tonight. Good luck Deer902, Hope you get the buck you're after.

Well, so far I've been seeing a lot of bucks, but haven't scored on one. Friday is the last day of bowseason, and the last chance to harvest a buck, before they all turn into doe tags for the antlerless season. I think I'll be able to hunt on Friday, it looks to be the plan to drive the drive back to my hunting spots on Thursday night. I've been putting in the time, so hopefully it'll pay off.

Well it was the last hour of the last evening of season, and decided what the heck and shot one of the young one's i've been seeing. I called him in with my mouth, arrowed him at 20 yards then watched him go down at about 45 yards. He had 7 or 8 points around 80 score. He's the littlest buck i've ever killed, but I cut some nice chunks of meat for jerky and some nice tenderloin cuts for steak, so he'll go to good use. :D
