I use a 100 grain spitfire , I have take over 50 deer and several bear with them and the reason I use them is they are the most accurate which is my first requirement for a broad head and with a proper hit they drop deer at 50 to 70 yards on an average. The placement I use is just over the heart where all the major arteries are.

I use a 100 grain three fixed blade broadhead that you can buy on one of the popular bidding sites for around $1 each when you buy a dozen of them. They are made in China and they may go up with the terrif. I have not shot a deer with one but see no reason it will not work as well as those costing much more.

Jenks, it is true that they can be made to work, it is also true that due to a number of things that are variable you will never get as consistent accuracy with fixed heads. My dad made long bows back before there were any commercially available and I started hunting with a long bow before I was 12 years old I am 82 now and still average 4 deer a year. I built my first cross bow in the late 60's and that was before they were commercially available I took 3 place in the us mail tournament with it. There are some times and game I would still use a fixed head for but for deer at any distance over 20 yards with a fast cross bow I believe the chance of a wounded hit instead of a kill is greater.

I notice you do not mention what you are shooting or the velocity you are getting. This could be very important as some heads that work quite well at velocities up to a bit over 300 FPS will go erratic at speeds closer to 400 FPS. And there are a few xbows that have built in problems when it comes down to accuracy.

I use 100 grain mechanical broad-heads that I bought out of a bin at a bow shop for 5 dollars a pack. I got two different kinds and only have two left. 4 for 4 on deer. 2 does a 8 and 10 pointers. Don’t recall the brand but the first pack looked like spitfires.

I only use my crossbow when it is very cold and I just want to set still balled up like a rabbit to get off the shot. But, I use the same 3 blade 100gr Thunderheads that I have used for years out of my compound. They have been very effective. My longest shot has been maybe 25 yds., if that makes a difference.
