I don't think $300 will get you much of a safe setup ?

for a 10 year old there is only one xbow id recommend reguardless of price . The Parker Challenger. it comes as a kit. its small in size and one of the lightest crossbows out there.ive seen them on ebay for 350$ range. that crossbow has a anti dry fire. http://www.ebay.com/itm/Prk-Challeng...item231b85c9c6

horton summit 150, was my first xbow and is fairly light and simple to use. 6 deer were killed with it in one season between myself, family and a friend.

I'd try to find a lightly used Excalibur Vixen or Pheonix.

I'd buy a used Excalibur, Ten Point, or Horton before I'd buy any Barnetts. Not knocking 'em, just that quality doesn't compare. When I bought my CB I wanted one that will last my lifetime and plus if need be.

Look at a Barnett, many have different opinions on them but they are accurate and flat shooting.

Barnetts tend to blow up, crack limbs, have front risers break, lousy warrenty and many other issues.

If your budget is limited look at a used Excal or Ten Point

Hmm..ive been shooting them for 8 years now and really haven't had any major problems...but like anything....there maybe lemons out there....and Barnett CS is excellent if you talk to them like an human being...
