Default New toy for deer season

Just picked up an Excalibur Phoenix.
Have been doing some practicing and sighting the scope. So far no complaints. I like the overall size and feel of it.

Anyone else have one of these? Any tips?

Very nice, Personally i have a Ibex and a equinox, just picked up the equinox a few months ago, Only thing i can recommend for ya are some limbsavers, they're about $20 and will quiet down your bow a lot, I have them on my equinox along with s5 dampeners, the limbsavers took away a lot of the "twangy" noise the bow makes when you fire.

Not 100% necessary but i like to have them.

Good luck on your hunting trips.

Limbsavers may take some "twang" out of the limbs (seems to bother archer more than deer) they also slow the speed of the limbs, ergo the speed of the arrow by 8-10 fps, depending where they are placed. ANY application to limbs or string will reduce arrow speed. Fellow brought in a bow for reserving recently with 8 (EIGHT) rubber string spiders on string and cables, wich affected net loss of 50 fps! Said it was a "different bow" once removed. String stoppers do not affect arrow speed, cause limited reduction in noise (not to the point that deer won't hear it) but do provide some insurance against bow damage if bow is dryfired. Recommend them esp if fast string is used.

Great bow! It does everything well and is so durable that it can be passed to the next generation!

Nice CB! Im sure you are really going to enjoy it. I myself have the Excal Vortex. Just put on a dacron Excalibur Superstring #2097 I believe. I think it made the bow quieter and gave me a little more speed. I also just ordered some Gold Tip LaserII arrows with the 110gr brass inserts, aluminum flat nocks, and Vanetech vanes. Cant wait to get the arrows. I hear they are pretty much best arrow combination for the Vortex and shoot great out of the other Excal models. Also use the Varizone scope that came with the bow and really like that as well although it is a little heavy. I hear the Hawke scopes are really nice as well though I can't see replacing the VariZone when it works great for my needs. Enjoy your bow.... you made a good choice there! Excals in my opinion are the best when everything is taken into consideration. Quality, Accuracy, Construction, Warranty / Customer Service, and owning a recurve makes for easy maintenance and very few parts to wear out.

better get them in close, recurves are really loud. a buddy bought one last season used. him and his brother setup on the edge of a field 75yds apart. he shot a doe with the recurve and spooked a buck under the other guys stand. his brother said it was so loud he thought it had exploded. its up for sale now.

My Vortex is no louder than my Horton TR175 was. Especially with the dacron superstring. As far as gettin' them in close... I generally try to keep my bow shots 30 yrds and under when possible anyways. Anything less than 30 yrds with my Vortex and its game over. just sayin....

Another sample of one? Not again. I've owned 5 crossbows so far, two were compound, which are no quieter than the recurves. You don't suppose tha buck was spooked by the doe's 'death run?'
No crossbow can be made so quiet that a deer won't hear it. But it's purely academic, the noise/motion of re ****ing pretty much assures you won't be getting another shot. Secret to hunting deer with crossbow: shoot at calm deer, within a reasonable range. Under 40 yards for me.

Way to state the obvious, I think its clear to everybody that limbsavers slow down a bow, but with these types of Crossbows 8fps isn't noticeable at all, Also i never told this fellow to put on 8 rubber string spiders, that's retarded and yea obviously getting an extra 50fps out of a bow will make it a whole other animal, but 8fps is unnoticeable.

Also once again you stated the obvious, everyone knows that a string stopper won't affect arrow speed because by the time the string hits the stopper the arrow has long left the string.

Also out of curiosity, what was the point of your post? Like I mean I've used limbsavers and have no issues with them and recommended them to this guy, you posted talking about how putting 8 string spiders on your bow is a bad idea because it reduces fps by 50....Like i get your point about the limbsaver slowing a bow down by a ridiculously small amount, but after that you just stray offtopic. Since putting 8 string spiders on a crossbow's string is almost like having a guy hold the string while you shoot it, in other words it will obviously reduce the bow's fps.

I would be interested to know what crossbow he was using?

At any rate unless the string snapped or the limbs hit a tree "So loud he thought it had exploded" sounds extremely exaggerated, the excalibur ibex i own has no dampning system, no leaches, no limbsavers and apart from a bit of "twang" when the string hits the stopper there is hardly any noise. As for how my equinox is setup its a fair bit quieter than my friends barnett predator.

Only crossbow I've shot that sounded like an explosion was a 150# Hou Shieh, but it did nearly explode...the string snapped and one of the limbs cracked, but i sure as hell wasn't hunting with that thing. So unless he was using one of those i don't know what your talking about.

My point was that ANYTHING on string and limbs affect speed. Judging by some of the comments here and elsewhere 8-10 fps is a big deal to some folks. So, if they don't affect noise level, only vibration, and string stoppers do the same thing without affecting speed-plus provide insurance in case of dryfire-why not use them?
The multiple spider comment dramatizes the affect of things on string/cables. Glad you're happy using 'em. Chill. I just posted MY opinion; like, everyone has a bellybutton.
