Confused
 

Hi this is the first time I have come on the crossbow section here. I was hurt in an auto accident and can't use my compound bow anymore. I love bow hunting it is my favorite way to hunt. I have gone through the process with my state and Dr. and received a permit to use a crossbow.

Now my problem. I don't know a darned thing about them. I don't want to spend a ton of money right away as who knows I may not like it. But I don't want to buy junk. There is not a lot of crossbows in my area Bass Pro is about it. We have 2 archery shops in the area one sells nothing but 10 point the other Excalibur . now to me these are pretty high priced although I have been looking at the Phoenex, but I read it is mostly for small framed folks. Now I really want to get into this but I am afraid some slick talking sales person might stir me in a way that I really don't want to go. Any help would be appreciated. Mike

Many new bows coming out for model year, I would wait till I see all the choices.

If Phoenix is for small framed folks I must be missing something. Happens to be my favorite bow, I'm 6'2' 245 and with a 37" reach.
Hanging around these and other crossbow sites can be very enlightening. Ask all the questions that come to mind. Crossbows are a highly personal thing so I won't recommend one over another. Do yourself a favor and call Dave at Wyvern Creations, 603 659 0575, for an unbiased and well informed discussion about what might work for you. But, I'm betting you're gonna like horizontal archery.

The Phoenix is a great bow especially if you are going to shoot a whole lot. I am 5'3" and find the Phoenix easier to c0ck but always take the Vortex when hunting. The Phoenix is not for the height challenged as Cossack says. It has more than enough power and speed for anything that walks North America with the exception of big bears. To suggest that it is for smaller people is ridiculous. It certainly is a better choice over the bigger bows for women and younger people who do not have the strength to c0ck the bigger bows but without question a good choice for taller people with monkey arms!:woot:
Edit:don't think that bows of this quality are expensive. Amortize it over a couple of life times. If it can be handed down a generation or two how expensive is it? Aside from that think about compounds. You spend several hundred dollars or even over a grand then you continue to keep spending the same or more on accessories. It just isn't close cost wise to a compound!

welcome to our world!!! yes there are many types of crossbows available. 2010 is going to have a lot of new ones to pick from. in regaurds to your accident when looking at xbows keep in mind one issue ****ing it will you be able use a rope or will you need a mechanical? dont be afraid to ask questions on these forums we will be happy help you

Few things about CB's thats good to know. Machined riser! Unless you happen to buy a cast risered Excal. Alum rail is where it starts, good quality CB's are not cheap. They are an investment, if liked Bowhunting then you will love using a diff type of Bow. The range is short they are abit awkward at 1st, but they shine in accuracy! Lots of quality used Excals around from $350 up!

I know the Excals have excellent resale value, have never owned a 10 pt, so can't comment much on theirs except I suspect it's good also.

The USA warranty rep in Oh has a shop and is cheapest anywhere I've found on strings and such. If you do get an Excal, you can deal w/ him direct on any issues, and he sells bows to boot. Danny Miller at [740] 483-2312. Phone or fax only, no web site.

Both he and Wyvern are great guys to do business w/. I tell recurve guys about Danny and compounders about Wyvern, although Wyvern carries almost all brands and Danny only Excals.

When a manufacturer has to keep comming out with something new to make a sale I tend to be a little leary especially when I am going to use it to hunt. That said and past experience as a factor Excaliber all the way.

But with the growing use in more and more states and the high cost of some bows, they are trying to find a price that will get buyers, then move up after they have decided they like it. Just a thought.:)

alot of good answers-the only thing i can add is to shoot them before you buy one. as with any xbow or bow they all have different feel and "kick" so to speak.
