$40 Hog Hunt

:D Got a chance to cut a fat hog in the....well lungs hopefully. A friend of a friend had some trapped wild piglets penned and was feeding them out. Well, they rooted under the fence and escaped. The owner whacked one of them and butchered it out, I got a chance to try and get one of the two left roaming around for $40 if I get it, nothing if I don't. Supposedly, the one owner whacked was 250 lbs. All corn fed porkie, lol. Looks like Sun or Mon is the earlest I can hunt, but am going to set up ground blind and scatter some corn asap. Not really my idea of a good hunt, lol, but they have been loose for a week or so and are skittish already. Heck of alot better deal than the $350 Tx hunt w/ no shot a year or so ago.

Best way to get the hogs in to a bait is make some sour corn mash andbury it down about 2 feet, They will root around for several days toget at the corn

Seem to recall one method was 2 lires of Coke in a plastic bucket of corn. Any other ways? I told the pig rancher to throw a few handfuls out for me and I'd get him a bag, lol.

I was surprised to learn not long ago that there are feral hogs in wisconsin, alot more than I had realised anyway, particularly in my county, I'm in the process oftrying to findsome info on the deal buthave yet to find out anything solid, hopfully it will turn out to be fairly practical and worth while to try to hunt one down... if so that mission will be fairly high on mylist of things to do... ;)

:DLookee Here! 7:30 this am, got it done. Didn't take camera on hunt, if you can even call it that, lol, but we had it hauled home and cut up by 9 am. This was about 50/50 hog hunting and buying a butcher pig, but after the bucks I have dropped on hogless hunts, couldn't resist. Ecet, 20 yds, it ran another 20 and was all done. It weighed 225# live weight, didn't gut it or anything til I got it home. The real trick was loading it into my pickup by myself, but had enough rope to pull it up in tree and tie it off, then back truck under it.

:D446 gr [total]Gt from Greywolf on Excal w/ 100 gr Slick trick. Was laying in the grass another 10-15 yds from hog. Found it had cut half of two ribs on one side, blew through a whole rib on off side and looked like I don't need to sharpen it at all. Gotta love em! Same "twin fountains" out of the pig like last time.

thats cool...

I've never done it but I've heard alot of people say there not much "hunt" involved with it, but it would be neat to try it

I'm kind of looking forward to some promising news about hog hunting over here, but unfortunately no one around here seems to want to enlighten me with any useful information... [>:]

Well, from my other experiences w/ them, sitting in blinds or stands near feeders, they either come in or don't. They have an uncanny sense of smell and play the game well. My gal pal's son in law dog hunts them in Ok, at least when he's not in jail, lol. They go to the baying dogs much like a coon hunter. I can't get around well enough for that. The one I shot had been back in the wild for ablout 10 days or so and was already acting a little spooky, in another 2 weeks it would be completely feral again. We found bird shot from a scatter gun under the hide when we cleaned it, so someone has had a whack at it somewhere along the line. Trapping, feeding out, selling is a regular cottage industry here and is the reason it's hard to find private property to hunt them on.

Dan, Congrats on getting that hog. Enjoy the chops, etc. Corn fed should make it very tasty. :D
