New to crossbows
 

Hello to all. This is my first post on this forum. While I've hunted with my longbow and compound for several years, takingmany deer, using a crossbow is new to me. With Illinois now allowing all of us over 62 years of age to use a crossbow (plus Ihavea bum left shoulder), I'm looking forward to this year's turkey and deer season. I recently tried out several models and settled on a Parker Buck Buster 150# with a single red dot scope, having used such a scope for years on my .44 mag T/C Contender with much success.I quickly learned that using the cocking rope made things much easier. To shorten the learning curve, I'm sure many of you have advice that would prove valuable to me concerning my learning to properly use the crossbow for hunting. Right now, I'm like a sponge trying to soak up as much as I can garner from the internet. Any suggestions you can offer would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum !! I, too, am from Illinois and am over 62 years old. I learned a lot from the forum and suggest you pay attention to these guys before you buy a crossbow. I used a crossbow for the first time last season (Excalibur Vortex) and took 4 deer with it. I have to say I love the Vortex. Good luck as you venture into the world of crossbow hunting.

I too am also new to CB's,I started a year ago due to shoulder problemsand with the help of the guys on here I enden up with a 10point ProFusion compound and a Excal Vortex recurve and couldnt be happier...

Welcome to the world of crossbow hunting, anything ya want to know you can find it here. I take alot of hogs with my XBow, this year I will be using it on bear as soon as the season opens. I occasionaly take it coyote hunting also, if I can get them close enough.

Thanks for all of your replies. I'm hoping to take a turkey with a crossbow this spring as well as deer next fall. What broadhead(s) do you recommend for these two game animals? While my turkey shots will be from the ground, deer shots will be taken from a tree stand, if these are factors in broadhead selection.

Most people have their favorite broadhead. The real key is to chose one you like and then make sure iot shoots well from you crossbow with the arrows you are using. There are several good braodheads from 4 blade replaceable insert heads to fixed blade to mechanicals, weighing from 85grs and up. I prefer Slicktrick 100gr and Muzzy 4blade 100gr Broadheads. For me they fly just like a field tip and they do the job. Using a grappler behind a BH for turkey will help pass prevent pass through.
