Short or long string?
Hi all,
I"m building a CB using a Panzer V prod. I can't find a reliable figure of the string length (even the manufacturer gives a conflicting data). Assuming a correct distance between the prod and the trigger catch: Is itsafer (for the prod) to go with the shorterstring (25 5/8")or the longer (27.5")?A short string will give theprod asomewhat greater bend. A long string will reduce brace hight (and maybe greater shock?). Beside the interesting theoretical question, does anyone know the correct string length, or how to figure it out? and how isstring properly measured (inside or outside of loops? loops flattened or rounded?)? Thanks, Yuv |
RE: Short or long string?
The short string would be less likely to cause damage, but it would be very inefficient and still the possibility of damage would exist.
The string should be measured under some tension with the loops flattened as they woul be when on the bow. Outside or inside would make very little difference, but the longer measurement would be safest, as the string can always be shortened by twisting. |

RE: Short or long string?
The recomended string length for that prod is 29.12" The powerstroke is 12.5" so to get the most from that prod you will need to build your bow to take into account that much draw. You can go shorter on the draw length to reduce the pull, but I would not go shorter on the string since it preloads the prod more than it was designed for and performance will probably suffer and it may break. Make sure it is wrapped (myself I use leather) since if it breaks and flys apart it gets very interesting for bystanders....

RE: Short or long string?
ORIGINAL: Wyvern Crossbow The recomended string length for that prod is 29.12" BUT - the unstrung prod measures only 27" from nock to nock, and 27.6" from tip to tip, so a 29.12" string seems too long. I would be eternally greatfull if someone could measure an actual stock string. Also - what do you guys say about the original issue and about determining string length or brace hight of an unknown prod? |

I think it's safe to say most of us don't have a clue about unknown prods, most recurve guys here shoot Excals and starting this year, some new 10 pts. Wyvern and Arthur P have built their own xbows, and are your best source of advice here. good luck! |
RE: Short or long string?
is that measurement straight across from tip to tip?? If so, that is not the correct measurement. What you do is run a tape measure from onetip along the curve on the back of the bow to the other tip. Basicly taking the long way around. Remember also that the string will need to be twisted to get the correct brace height (no clue there, give Barnett a call on that one) so the string lenght at rest will be longer than what it is on the bow...
