Anybody still deer hunting?
Ohio has about a week left... I've passed afew small bucks and does, but now it's crunch time. Going out lately has been testing how bad I really want to hunt... high winds, single digit temps. I've got one more week. I'll be out the next 3 nights, anything with antlers is in trouble! Hunting after work is pretty decent now... we can hunt 30 mins. after sundown soI can sit until ~ 6:15. Hopefully the new Exocet will be up to the challenge, if something comes along.

RE: Anybody still deer hunting?
I'm still hunting on Fort Pickett in Nottoway, Virginia. Our State season officially ended the first Saturday in January but Pickett still lets you bowhunt only until January 31, and only doe's can be taken. I took off next week to enjoy the final hurrah until this October.

RE: Anybody still deer hunting?
All deer seasons in Illinois are now over. Time to begin planning for turkey season.

In Ohio, too, but my freezer is full and the weather has inspired me to set by the woodstove. :)
I may go out another time or two, but it would take a nice buck to get me pull the trigger. (but my standards are low - a "nice" buck is a spike or better! [&:]) |

Yep ~~~~ Still takin' 'em out !!!
Have until last day of January>>>> Muzzleloader & bow still open. Regular rifle ended last Sunday. Then, have a few weeks of rest, then get started on preping the summer plots for the monsters ~~~~ |

Ohio also, and I have not been out since ML season. I still have a $24 dollar antlerless tag left, but with two deer in the freezer I have had little motivation to go out. Have had alot of things keeping me busy so setting up time and finding ambition is low!
Happy Pappy, you had the turnips right? How are they doing? |
RE: Anybody still deer hunting?
Here in Delawareshot gun ends Saturday, then we have the last week of January to hunt muzzleloader and bow. then the fat doe sing.
This is what I did Monday night. Got in the stand about 3 o'clock yesterday, air temp around 24 with light west wind. This stand is on a 20 ft. wide logging road with some tall grass patches on it. It has thick young pines on both sides of the road, with a 4 foot ditch paralleling the road. You can see 200 Yd's. up the road and 400 Yd's. down the road. I am shooting a Savage muzzleloader and smokeless powder, with a 250 Gr. Hornady SST. At 4:45 a nice deer came out of the ditch upon the road and stood broad side to me looking away from we, it was about 50 Yds. past my 200 Yd. marker. I put my scope on 10 power to make sure it was a doe. When she looked at me I saw only ears on her head. Then I pulled the trigger and she disappeared into some tall grass. then a deer came out of the ditch and went back into the pines. I walked down to were I last saw her, thinking that I am going to have to track her, but not this time she was laying in some tall grass. It was 81 paces back to my 200 Yd. marker, I am thinking about 275 yd. shot. Here are some picks of the deer and the bullet. This bullet hit her right shoulder and came to rest under the skin on her left flank. The bullet retained all but 10 Gr's. of it weight. I keep hearing that this gun will kill at 300 Yd's. but I think that is the limit. http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r101/oldsnow/Doe1-21-08012.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r101/oldsnow/Doe1-21-08005.jpg http://i142.photobucket.com/albums/r101/oldsnow/Doe1-21-08017.jpg |
RE: Anybody still deer hunting?
Dang,
You might inspire me to shell out the $$$$ fo a Savage with stories like that! Congratulations!!!!!!!! |
RE: Anybody still deer hunting?
Mike. I have a Savage as well. I know it is a 200+ yard gun from dropping deer on a low neck shot. But I personally wouldn't shoot much past that. The gun is amazingly strong and stupid accurate. I know one idiot that loaded powder, bullet, powder, bullet and fired it....on two different occasions!
