Are crossbows noisier than compound bows?

Thanks!

Significantly!
There are things you can do to make them a bit quieter, but still not like a compound. Trying to get the energy needed to fling an arrow from a bulky crossbow comes at the cost of sound.

I think a CB stock is like a built in microphone and speakers! They are very load and you may be able to help them some but a Compound will always be quieter. A BOO string makes a big difference though!

The Boo string was the most noticable change I have seen in my bow, it affected many things, noise was the biggest.

Acutally Dan, when you put one of my Xcel string with silencers that acutally stay on the Exals are pretty quiet. When you put a STS on it things get real quiet. I shot a silenced bow in the basement and the arrow makes more noise than the bow and the main noise from the bow is the arm that holds the arrow. A buddy of mine shot one at 20 yards and could hear the sweet thump of the arrow!

They are loud, they can be quieted somewhat, but it really isn't necessary at reasonable hunting ranges. A deer out to 25-30 yards isn't going to have time to react.
I do have a Boo (catwhiskered)string, and it made a big reduction in noise which is easier on my ears! ;)
I think the recoil/shock/vibration you feel through the stock makes it seem worse, too.

I should clarify that yes as Wabi said, you'll never make them quiet like todays modern vert compound bows.

W/ all due respect, Don, I'm sure from all I've read that the Excel w/ served whiskers is quieter than any other choice. You have a 100% positive feed back on them, impressive to say the least.I just don't want to give up the fps w/ Excel. I've read a deer can hear a twig the size of a pencil break at a 1/4 mile and a car door close at a 1/2 mile. I don't think one can quiet a bow enough to prevent string jump attempts at under 30 yd ranges and have little to no experience at the ones over 35 yds.

I suppose sooner or later I'll have to eat these words, lol. but for now, I like the FFF's. Can you serve whiskers on them? I'll run tests for a string, lol.

You'll never know the difference when you get the string for your Relayer. I can't tell the difference when looking at Fast Flight and Xcel string material. No telling what I might make you! LOL!
