What is the average effective range of a cross bow?

Same as a 65-70# compound. Most of us won't go past 30 yds and prefer 30 feet!

30 Yards is my limit.I have set and watched Deer for two hours at 40 yards,never took a shot.

I only shoot 25 because I have a 1 pin setup. I hold a little high at 25 and I'm good. When I used scope I would keep it to 30. Just because I have heard a lot of stories about deer jumping the string at a little over thirty. This is just what I do though. Everyone is different.

I am new to the game, just started this season. I am shooting a Parker 175 Terminator with slick trick Broadheads.
I Killed 2 bucks one 30 yds one 39 yds, both were complete pass throughs ,both deer did not travel over 50 yds to there
death.

I saw a guy on another site say that he shot deer out to 89 yards and he head shoots close deer. He also said his 10 year old xbow shoots 438 fps.I looked it up and it didn't. I posted that that was ridiculous and unethical to take shots that far and to head shoot a deer with and arrow. I said that it was people like him that give xbows a bad rap. I got attacked by everyone saying I was jealous and he was really good at working on bows so he could of added 100 fps to his bow.

With todays crossbows you have more then enough power to kill deer out past 50 yards, but that is not the problem, the time it takes for the arrow to get there IS!!!!!! Heck ....... even my 24 year old, 150 lb crossbow has enough power to do that, but out past 35 - 40 yards, time will be against you. At the longer distances, deer will have time to react to sound and move enough for either a miss or a bad hit, which is worse then a miss. Even if the deer does not react to sounds, it could just move (natural, dailly movement) to have the same effect as above.

IF your talking about larger, slower animals like MOOSE, then you can lengthen your distances out to maybe 45-50 yards.

YOu can hit accuratly out past 65 yard easily, Heck ............ over in Europe, they have compitations that shoot 100 - 150 yards and get groups of less then 6 inches, but the time from arrow release, to point of impact is just too great on a moveable target like an animal.

GT summed it up. Twenty is a done deal, you have the advantage over the deer hands down. Thirty yards and you still have a pretty good chance. Past thirty and the deer now has the upper hand and you risk having problems. You may find a guy that admits to getting deer at fifty yards, but he fails to admit how many he has missed or had bad hits on. I think all my deer have been less then fifteen yards, most at ten.
