Advice for 1st xbow

Hello all,

A co-worker just asked me about crossbows as her husband has requested one for Christmas. So I have a couple questions that I thought I would pose to the group for input. The basic questions come down to which xbow to buy and where to buy it.

Basic facts to help you steer me in the right direction:

We are in Columbus, Ohio

This guy is looking to expand his hunting opportunities and will probably hunt a half dozen times a year.

I have a 1996 Horton Hunter Supreme (150#, 260 FPS) that I have taken several deer with. It continues to be just fine for hunting with, but I must admit I am getting the itch to get a new one.

What would be the minimum $$ bow that would give low maintenance and be reliable. Similar quality to the Horton Hunter Supreme that I have?

I think I would want to recommend to her one of the following bows:
Horton Summit, Horton Explorer, Excalibur Phoenix, Excalibur Vortex.

Besides speed, what advantages are there as you move to the higher priced bows?

Bruce

I would suggest going to Gander mountain or Buckeye outdoors. Both places have a good selection. Buckeye will give you better service. Go see Buzz there. He has been crossbow hunting for decades.

Not in any order of preferrence Parker Buck Buster or Terminator. Ten PT.s TL7 or Pro Fusion. Those Hortons plus Legend. Excals Vixen!

I can't say enough about my Vixen. It's light, simple, and freakishly accurate. The vari-zone scope on it is pretty cool too.

I just bought a horton summit 150 at buckeye/vances. $269.00 for the combo. you can see my post of the 9 point I shot with it this afternoon. I would buy something simple for his first one. then he can figure his tastes and pick out his own high dollar bow. that is what I did. I swithced from compound to crossbow permantly this year. I have picked out my tenpoint xbow to buy in the spring.

excal phoenix. Its low maitenance, reliable and you would have a hard time finding something more accurate.

Not that I'm biased but get a Pheonix. They don't tell you when you buy it but I think the arrows are wire guided for the kill zone.

A genie granted me three wishes. I won't tell you what two of them were but the third was for a BOO string and it's slicker than snot on glass!!
