Food plot seed?
I live in central VA and was wondering what other guys in VA and neighboring states liked to plant in their fall food plots.
If we don't get some rain it won't make any difference what we plant. xbowbarry |
RE: Food plot seed?
I just planted a mix blend of clover, oats, chicory and rape in a well prepared seed bed for this fall. It's my first food plot experience, but like you, if we don't get some rain on it, it ain't gonna matter. I live in central NC.

RE: Food plot seed?
Where in central VA do you live? I live in King and Queen and work in King William 100 yards from Caroline County.
Igo to Southern States and either get Imperial blended with Chicory, red and white clover. Or sometimes they have smaller bags of each individual one you can buy. Need to go there tomorrow to look around for some fall stuff. Dave |

RE: Food plot seed?
I have broadcast 2 1/2 lbs. of tri clover mix during a thunder shower. Been 14 days and none of it has come up. Guess it got all burnt up in this 100 + degree heatwave! I'll try it one more time if it rains.[:o]

Krypt Keeper,
I live in Bedford Co. We usualy plant some small grain sometimesmixed with winterpeas andclover. Have had good luck with NWTF mix called stru-n-rut. It has alfalfa, clover, annual ryegrass and birdsfoot trefoil. With the right weather it looks like a green carpet when it comes up and deer LOVE it! xbowbarry |

I visit your neck of the woods often with some friends that I ride with. We really enjoy some of the curvy backroads. Some are lucky and live in Lynchburg so they don't have a 200 miles trip to just get there.
Just like you said with the right weather. My plot I had planted started doing so well but it was so dry. Even with me watering wasn't enough to keep the sun from buring it up. Out of 6 total plots between me and a buddy only one started coming up really good, but not great. |

RE: Food plot seed?
I think I joined there to look at some fizzers. Buddy bought one earlier this yr. and I did some research on them for history and all that fun jolly stuff. You probably know another friend of mine on there. He goes by B. Myers, he spends lots of time at VIR doing trackday and sold his fizzer to my buddy after he got an R6 for his new track toy.
I am around here and there on the bike boards.. Mostly stick on Cycleforums, and my CBR1100XX forum, but like I said I do get around, always looking at bikes to maybe rebuild or tinker on. |
RE: Food plot seed?
Im here on NC/VA Border 10 miles south of Martinsville Speedway..We have tumble weeds around here:D..I plant imperial no-plow and going to do the same this year..If you can plant near shade this will help alot..keeps the sun off of it..some seed needs alot of moisture some needs little..No-plow works well for us down here..I tried imperial extreme last year and it was dry like this it came up but not well..no-plow will do better in these conditions..Deer love it..I took 6 out of it with the xbow..

RE: Food plot seed?
Got some nice looking deer checking out your area. I just put down some more stuff on Tuesday for the fall. I forget the name now, was a small 10pound bag that does about 1/4 acre Think Biologic also made it. Now I wish I never threw away the bag
Like you mentioned we have had some good rain this past week and should help it grow. |
