Reserve your string

Ok boys here goes.
Since we are reserving you will have to remove the old serving. On one end of the serving you will see a ridge that runs part of the lenght of the serving that starts on one end. The ridge is the tag end of the serving material that the serving wraps over top of. Put that side to your right. Now slice the serving open along that ridge. All you are doing is removing a thin slice a little at at time. Do not use the tip of your knife. All you have to do is to completely cut one wrap and then you can unravel the serving.

Now mark the string where both ends of the serving were. Place another mark half an inch to the right of the left end of the serving so you have three marks. The mark to the right of the left end is where you stop serving with the serving tool and you start the back serve.

Put your string on your string jig and take all the slack out of the string so that there is no real tension on the string and run your serving material between the two bundles of string at the right mark. Now put some tension on the string with the string jig. I have no way of telling you how much tension but it should be about what the bow puts on and then some. Don't be shy about how much tension. I think the more the better and I haven't damaged a string yet. Don't for get that the tension put on the string when the xbow is fired is far higher than when the string is at rest.

RE: Reserve your string

Now go around the string once to the right of where the serving material goes through the string.

Dnk 02-19-2007 08:35 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Next wrap the string towards the left over the tag end of the serving with moderate tension and then pull down to tighten the four wrappings.

Dnk 02-19-2007 08:37 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Pull the tag end towards the left to take up all the slack in the tag end and tighten the first wrap.

Dnk 02-19-2007 08:46 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Now wrap the serving with lots of tension. The string will twist and you should notice that the right side gets twisted tighter and the left side more loose. While wrapping apply as much pressure to the serving tool to push the wrapping to the right. You are trying to have the serving wraps applied tightly against each other. Wrap for about an inch and a half or so and stop. Now cut off the tag end. You'll find that the string snuggles into the groove of the tool which protects your project from your knife. Cut it as close to the serving wrap as possible.
I can't explain how much tension to use but experience will guide you. Use as much as you can without twisting the string to death but enough to turn the string a couple of turns.

Dnk 02-19-2007 08:47 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Continue wrapping until you hit the first mark which again is half an inch from the end of the serving and stop.

Dnk 02-19-2007 08:50 PM

RE: Reserve your string

While holding the serving wrap from unravelling pull out about ten inches of serving material and cut.

Dnk 02-19-2007 08:54 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Now start the back serve by putting the end of the serving material over the string. I use a hook to handle the loop. You'll need ten back serve wraps.

RWK 02-19-2007 08:55 PM

RE: Reserve your string

What are you using for the serving.

Dnk 02-19-2007 09:03 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Now take the tag end and lay it over the top of the serving and using the hook continue the wrap over the tag end. Keep the wrappings tight against each other. Its hard to explain but you want to wrap amost over the previous wrap to keep the rows of wrap tight against each other.

Dnk 02-19-2007 09:06 PM

RE: Reserve your string

When you run out of back serving leave the hook in place and pull on the tag end..

Dnk 02-19-2007 09:07 PM

RE: Reserve your string

You should pull until the hook is tight against the string.

Dnk 02-19-2007 09:10 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Now while pulling on the tag end slip the hook out and cut off the tag end leaving about a quarter inch of serving material.

Dnk 02-19-2007 09:12 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Now light the tag end and when the burning end reaches the serving tap the flame out with your finger but put some spit on your finger so that it does not stick to your finger. Otherwise you'll pee your pants!

Thats it!

What are you using for the serving.
Crossbow serving. BCY or Brownell makes it.

Ok good buddy, give us a run down on String ServingMaterial and Diameter which you are using?:)

Dnk 02-19-2007 09:51 PM

RE: Reserve your string

Here is Brownell, look about half way down the page. http://www.brownellarchery.com/products.htm
Cannot find anything on the BCY site but both are called crossbow serving. Both are .036" diameter and braided. Brownell is resin coated and I don't know about BCY.

RE: Reserve your string

Here is a good site to see how the back serve is done. It also explains how to tie a nock which is a great way to attach something like cat whiskers onto a string(they call it a nock point installation) but just tie the nock point or serving over what have you or tie a few wraps to mark your string for centering purposes.

Dnk,
Thanks, Well Done...
Maybe I am pushing it but do you have anyinfo on fletching arrows and inserting the nocks with a bitzenberger. Can I use shorter fletching than that length on store bought arrows?
Mike

Hai folks:D
Boo, sorry for that - I used your topic...I just have a short question!
My FFF-string is broken...I don't know how, when, where....My question is, can i use this string or not?
Take a look at...

Thanks! milan.

RE: Reserve your string

Hey Milan, what bow is it for, what string is it or what material, are you shooting light arrows, how many strands are there and how many are damaged including the one cut.

Milan_slo 02-17-2009 01:04 PM

RE: Reserve your string

I have Exocet 200 + absorber V-bar.

* Excalibur Flemish Fast Flight ( http://www.aiacrossbow.com/accessori...burstrings/97/ )
* I am shooting; (sometimes i shoot with 100gr f.point or 125gr.)
- 2219, xx75 TenPoint C-hunter (20" 420grain with 100f.point)
- Carbon Impact XLT22 Ultrabolt (20" don't know the weight, but I think it's heavier than t.point)

* String has 11 - White strands and 12 - Black strands.

* Anyway, I looked again and there are only 2 - White "half broken" strands;

The string was just reserved, I don't know, maybe I stretched it too much...hmm

Thanks! milan

Dnk 02-17-2009 03:07 PM

RE: Reserve your string

First, that string should have 28 strands. If two are cut then they are out of the equation. That string is sufficient for a 225 lb bow. A 200 lb bow is 1/8th less tension but the string has lost much less than that (1/7th) so mathematically I could say yes it is ok but if it really only started out with 23 strands then it is not usable. Bottom line? Get another string.

Ok!

lets get crossbows into NY.....

Support Crossbow Bills in New York
IMMEDIATE ACTION:

A major crossbow push involving the Department of Environmental Conservation is currently taking place in New York. Senate Bill S06793, sponsored by Senator David Valesky, and Assembly Bill A00924, sponsored by Assemblywoman Francine DelMonte, authorizes the Department of Environmental Conservation to promulgate standards authorizing hunting with a crossbow by June 30, 2011. The bills are scheduled to come to the floor on June 2, 2010.

Every major New York sportsman group from the New York Conservation Council is in full support of this change and is asking their members to get in contact with their legislatures. Both Senator Valesky and Assemblywoman DelMonte have also asked for the NRA's support for their bills. Please support this legislation by sending a letter of support to all members of the Senate and Assembly Environmental Conservation Committees as soon as possible. To send a letter, copy and paste the following letter(s), add your name and address, then copy and paste the email addresses.

Remember, the fight for crossbows is not about their usage. Rather, it is about when they should be used. In order to use them at all, this legislation must be passed to empower the DEC to have crossbows as an option.

I do the same as pics show, but I also run another serving on top of the first. The first I do may be 3" of serving and another on top will go out another 1/2" on either side. I started doing this when I found that the mfg do two rows of serving. I now stock and use the BCY Crossbow Serving and not sure if that is needed anymore due to thickness.
