Serving Jig
Decidied to start reserving my own strings, so needed something to stretch the strings. Built this jewel in about 1/2 hr. lol. Now my problem is two fold. I don't know how tight to stretch them, or how much tension to put on the serving spool. My first attempt [buddies string, lol] when I got to the end where you serve over a loop to pull bitter end back thru, I had the serving so tight I broke the loop pulling, now I have no idea where the end actually is, lol. Here ya go:

RE: Serving Jig
Here's a better view of the right end. The distance between the two uprights is 45".

RE: Serving Jig
Looks good Dan! I know when the guy reserves mine he has to pull about as hard as he can to pull the loop back under. Buy this I mean he braces his feet and takes a lean posture and such. But I have never seen him pull hard enough to break the serving. I would say if you pulled it half way under it should be good since that is what it seems like he does, but then his tail is left and just nips it off. But then again you should have a spool of the stuff just take it off and try it again! The jig looks good!

RE: Serving Jig

RE: Serving Jig
Dan, have you figured out what kind of tension is required on the string during the serving process?
I have an old fish weighing scale that I may mount to one end to monitor the tightness for consistency.. |

RE: Serving Jig
lol.. I meant the tension on the string, not the serving.. A scale in place of one of your threaded hooks on your jig, not the spool..:D
My serving string is #150, .036Dia. Made by Brownell & Co. |

My first attempt [buddies string, lol] when I got to the end where you serve over a loop to pull bitter end back thru, I had the serving so tight I broke the loop pulling, now I have no idea where the end actually is, lol. Here ya go: about 10 loose loops the opposite way you wound serving, now hold the serving on the spool next to the serving and start wrapping both, as you do this you will unwind the loops you put on when they are all gone you pull on the spool. This method lets you wrap the end tighter and you are only pulling one end thru. Put a string on your jig and practice untill you get it right hope this helps. If its on a excalibur i twist the string a few rounds more than it needs that makes it smaller and when you take them out it tightens the serving. I wind the serving as tight as I can. Martinfaw |
RE: Serving Jig
If you don't like Marinfaw's method which is the traditional method try this. Get a braided serving, I use a crown serving which is slippery and strong. I use a soft bow string wax to wax the loop and the string where the loop is going and then use six turns over top of the loop then cut off just enough. I've found that its better if you put only one third of the tag end through the pulling loop and then yank it through. Then I use brake clean or alcohol to remove some of the wax then use liquid crazy glue to where the tag end goes under the serving.
I use both the brownell and bcy crossbow serving. The bcy is called kite cord. You don't have to use these serving material. I've found that others at least .026 or thicker works ok (but not as good) and I suspect that you can lighten the string if you use a thinner and lighter serving for more speed. On a vert bow it makes a good difference when you lighten the string. I could only imagine that its easier on the limbs as well. One thing to keep in mind. Serve the string so that when you twist the string to adjust brace height you tighten the serving. Oh yeah, you just have to hold on to the string with your hands to stop the string from twisting like crazy when you wrap your serving. |

RE: Serving Jig
Looking good David. Why are the brackets turned the other way.
It would save space. Turn buckle is a great idea. |
RE: Serving Jig
How did I miss that?? :) It would also be stronger the other way. I will turn them around later on, the 2X4 has already begun to twist anyways.
Thanks.. ORIGINAL: Dnk Looking good David. Why are the brackets turned the other way. It would save space. Turn buckle is a great idea. |
RE: Serving Jig
David, buy some 1" steel tubing, hardware and come to the shop some weekend and we'll make one!
|
RE: Serving Jig
I just may take you up on that..
I would have an easier time getting away during the week though..;) A tad apprehensive about being more that 20 minutes from the house here, but that trip is undoubtedly in my near future. One thing I would like to change is making the uprights adjustable, allowing one to slide closer to the next for working shorter strings, like my Daco's. I have used a short length of chain to close the gap, and it works, but an adjustable jig would be pretty slick too. |
RE: Serving Jig
David, how much are you going to shoot the Daco?
|
RE: Serving Jig
Likly not too much, it is stripped down right now in the shop, I am going to modify the stock to fit my sons shoulder.
I see what you are sayin though.. ORIGINAL: Dnk David, how much are you going to shoot the Daco? |
