RE: can someone help me
Lemme see if I can help some. No crossbow has a "low pop" when you pull the trigger. They are noisy, it's the nature of the beast. Said noise is usually the first comment new folks have. Most xbowers quickly learn it's not much of a factor at reasonable ranges.
The crank type cocking devices are a real pain, and I would suggest he try a rope cocker 1st, as they are cheaper, faster, quiter, center the string for accuracy, and most important in his case, cut the effort by 50% due to mechanical leverage. If he's been shooting a compound, he can probably cock a 150-175 LB xbow easily w/ rope cocker. I favor the Excals. I live in the boonies and can do my own strings, ect. All the Excals have the same nice trigger. There are lots of good xbows to be had, regardless of mfgr for the most part. Good luck, and welcome to this forum!! |
RE: can someone help me
Excals Exocet 200 or Phoenix would be good choices with the crank. They make some noise but any deer within 25 yds. will be dead before it hears to react! Some good after deer season sales going on ebay. I have had both and i liked the Exocet as its faster and flatter traj. The Phoenix is no slouch and with 2216's it can stay with any of them. Lots of good info from the other folks will be forth coming.

RE: can someone help me
Well I have stayed away from these post for a while but will give it a try for ya. The first thing you need to come to terms with is the low "pop" or "nothing loud". That is something you will not find in any CB, FACT! Do a search on this forum for ear plugs, you find that alot of people that have been using CB's for a while recommend them when new people start talking about trying to quite their CB. My friend, it is not going to happen. A CB has alot of energy in those small limbs so that in it's self will make more sound then a normal long bow. Then you have the stock, in my opinion the stock is like a set of speakers and mic for the loud powerful limbs. If you ever find a CB that is half as quite as a regular bow, you let us know cause we would all like to know.
On your second part about the cranks, I can offer no help. I think all the CB makers offer some type of crank. Some are permanently mounted some slip on and such. A few offer a rope style cocker that have a pulley affect to greatly reduce pull weight and I think Excal has that and a few guys on here really like it. I say I can be of no help because I have never used one so my advise only comes from what I have read on here. For a CB recommendation I can recommend my CB of choice which is Horton. You made a reference to nothing cheap, and I have realized in the last year that is a statement you need to use when buying a Horton. Horton has evolved into a huge CB maker that has been on the seen from the get go since Ohio and Arkansas first opened up the hunting world to CB hunting. Horton and Barnett were first on base to harvest the new market and in time that has proved to be a draw back. Horton has been sucked into the makem cheap WAL-MART game! I have always had a Horton, Dad gave me my first when I was sixteen I think and that bow after fourteen years is still busting knocks if you aim for the same spot. My new CB which was bought last year is the Horton supermax, another fine Horton product that will keep me happy and anyone else who lays hands on one. If you choose the Horton line you need to look for one thing in my opinion. It must have a machined aluminum barrel. The ones that they make for wal-mart and the other lower CB's they offer are a composite barrel of some sort. I think they are OK CB's but from what others say they lack in quality. But I also wonder when some only has a few bucks and make a last minute purchase from wal-mart with no knowledge is set to fail from the beginning IMO. SO in short get one of the higher end ones and you will be set, cut cost and you could be taking a risk. Lastly I will offer support for the Excal crowd. It's re-curve design is what lures me into it's seduction as time goes on. There is three good guys on here that can offer hard facts about there products that I can say you can trust, two of them have already spoke, and the crazy Canadian will chime in soon. Robert is also good with them so maybe he too can help on this. I have never shot an Excal but them boys sure seem happy. They do not sell them and they have all killed deer with them so I think they are good sources. One thing I can add about the Excal that gets me is the independence you get with one. The re-curve design lets you do all your own work without a bow press. If you buy a wheel bow you will be at the mercy of a shop, which I deal with and dislike. As for optics I like the Excal's custom adjustable speed scope called the V-ZONE. I have it on my Horton and love it. It has a adjustable speed ring on it that can be set to your CB's speed and then your 20, 30 and forty will be dead on. Some guys say the low light conditions are not the best with these, but I am happy with it. Sorry so long, but thats my scoop and good luck! Keep us posted! |

RE: can someone help me
This is just my opinion what I would reccomend doing is taking your father to a proshop that carries several different brands and let him look them over get his hands on them and shoot them and find out which ones he likes and then I would ask questions about what people thought about this one ot that one..

RE: can someone help me
lots of nice xbows on the market. i'm in love with my exocet. with the string changer you never need to go to a bow shop. hehe. i use the crank made by excaliber. they're not cheap. cost around $90. i use it most of the time due to a back injury. it attaches to the stock in seconds andcomes off just as quick. i'm quite fond of it. best advice i can give you is to go with a well known brand as it will hold resale value. (if you buy an excaliber......youi will never part with it)goodluck.:D

RE: can someone help me
There are some good crssbows out there, but to address this particular problem; the way you have to cock with a rope cocker puts strain on the back and might not be any better for him than a compound, while the best crank cocking mecabism is the accudraw by 10pt and can be used with out any strain on the back thats the reason I have one, if you have a strong preferance in x-bows it can be mounted on x-bows other than 10pt.
Under your circumstances I would also look for a light weight[physical]. Take a look at the Tition[10pt] and Pheonix[excaliber] Lee |
RE: can someone help me
Hello. I am the Canadian! LOL! I own three Excals and the only wheeled xbow I would and might buy is the Ten Point but I would find it diffcult to get over the price to get a Ten Point with a trigger as good as my Exals. The awsome thing about Excals is that I've never had to take any of them to a shop for anything at all in over ten years (might be 12 or more) of ownership. Sooner or later a wheeled bow has to be into the shop. Other good things about Excals is they are light, not too expensive, no options to buy, they withstand a dryfire (ten point has safeties for this purpose), its the easiest to reserve, great customer support, etc.
Cocking the Vixen is breeze for my wife with a rope cocker so I suspect your dad will have no issues. Bottom line is that if you don't get to shoot them then you can't make a sound decision. I never shot my first Xbow which is the old Exocet but I never looked back. I don't know if the Vixen was available at the time but I would have bought it had I'd known about it. The Vixen is more than fast enough, extremely accurate (it is often used in 3D) and has even taken moose. What more can a man ask for? LOL! BTW, welcome to the forum! |
RE: can someone help me
thanks for all the replys.. we went to basspro an looked at a few cross bows he is looking at this excaliber but gosh didnt know it was 1,600 dollars lol.. well he wants that one i have no idea what the name is beside excaliber but he loves it.. he was is always looking at the years he can have with it.. if he is lucky he will get out maybe once or twice a month to go hunting. an thats the only thing stoping him from getting the bow or telling me if he wants it for sure or not. but the excaliber we was looking at has a rifle scope crank an 4 arrows i think a 10 point like i said im not to sure i know nothing about cross bows. but im sure their is other bows out their he would like to.. How about the horton 1200 or what ever the number is? is that a good bow? my buddie has one an i shot it today an it shoots great but alittle vibration in it make my arms tingle.. an im sure my father dont want that.. but besides the excaliber any have any other nice bows inmind? i was on ebay looking at some crossbows an i showed him a paper of one that is for sale an its a Phonix or what ever year is 2006 an they want 700 for it only shot 7 or 8 times so what do you think it looks alittle older then 2006 but i could be wrong.. so please let me know your guy's opinion thank!

RE: can someone help me
What Excalibur is $1,600.00? I bought mine a few months ago for less than $500.00 Can. Not to mention that no one needs it the Vixen is more bow than needed and its the lowest price, easiest to cock and lightest of the bunch.

RE: can someone help me
Here is some links to a place that I think is the cheapest place in the US to buy Bow products, I think awshucks is the person who first found this place for us. I will give you the first link for an Excal on his site. You should be able after you buy the CB get a "right stuff" package and get the scope and everything you need for under 250 hundred bucks I think.
http://www.bowhunterssuperstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=40_145&products_id=316 Here is the right stuff package. http://www.bowhunterssuperstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=41_151&products_id=319 And since you asked here is a link for another recommendation. I think Horton makes a fine CB. But in my opinion you need to get one with a machined aluminum barrel on it, I personally do not like the ones with composite barrels on them. If you will get a Horton you will not be disappointed at all. If you first pick up a Excal and then a Horton, you will look to the floor for a bag of sand hanging off the bow! The Excal's have to be the lightest CB I have ever held in my hands! Here is the link and Good luck! http://www.bowhunterssuperstore.com/product_info.php?cPath=40_147&products_id=392 |
RE: can someone help me
Also, forgot to add about the Horton 1200? I know you said you did not have the numbers right, but I don't think they make a 1200? The make them in 150 and 175, but always have a name in front of it like HD, Legend, Realtree, ect...
