About 300 yards with my 300 winchester mag. Sorry, couldn't help myself. I would shoot up to 40 yards if the deer is completely unwary and busy doing something other than looking for danger (ie:eating/browsing) or up to 30 yards if it is looking around, sniffing the air, ears alert, tail up. Do a search and look for an earlier thread about this subject.

Yep, I would go about 300 yards with my .270 win.

With the horton I might go 45 yards.....in a field.....with a calm deer......broadside. But I probably wouldn't do it on a big buck....I like my good eater does.

aye 300 yds with my 3006, 75 with my 44 mag , 30 with my xbow. part of bow hunting is having the patience to wait for a good shot.

I'd go 100 yards with my 454 or 44 Freedom Arms.

I heard Cuz Strickland on TV today.. He said archery is not a game of how far but of how close. I think that pretty much says it all.
Then he turned around and shotyoung 8 point that could have used a couple of more years. I would have passed and waited for a 5.5 or 6.5 year old mature buck. NOT >>>>>>>>Whack!

In my opinion it is no different than using a compound bow. Know your limitations and never shoot beyond them. For me, it is 30 yards and I much prefer 20 or closer. I strive for the 20 yard or closer shot. You can not shoot and hope you made a good clean killing shot. You have to shoot and know you made a good clean killing shot. Even then, things happen.
