RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
Ok, so I can't help myself by looking. Grrr I hate myself!
RWK, I do stay up late most nights. I get all involved in fletching, reading posts, checking the forums out after dinner parties. Two to three am is not unusual. The rules of the forum ya know... not going to discuss this crap any more! I don't like the motion of yo-yos, up and down, up and down, never gets anywhere. I'd love to discuss this but not here. Anyone that wants to, come to Toronto so we can talk about it face to face, beer in hand. |
RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
ORIGINAL: Dnk Ok this is my last post on this thread. The last thing I want to do is have long AT style debate on crossbows. You've shown your lack of experience with crossbows by saying that crossbows are nothing more than a gun. First it shoots an arrow, 2nd the time between releasing the string on both instruments is identical to each other and no where similar to a rifle (a gun too if you will). Third, what is wrong with kids hunting with a bow, horizontal or vert? This smacks of jealousy that a "kid" will take your trophy. Your statement of 50 yard is rediculous and irresponsible at minimum. Fourty is stretching it. Sixth, spirit comes after the respect for the game we hunt after all we are the ONLY tool game managers have. It sounds like you got bored of hunting with a rifle, compound and crossbow. Why impose your limits on everyone else? Yes there are lots of "stuff" out there like compounds, bait etc and still the population of deer is still out of control. You traditional bow hunters are pretty amazing when you take a deer without doubt. I wish I could say that I took a deer with a string and stick but after taking a deer with a long bow, I would get back to my 300, savage ml, compound, handgun and anything else to put meat on my table. I certainly would impose my limitations on others. Why don't you leave these guys and gals alone and stick with our traditional archery, be proud of your achievements and stick together with everyone else to thwart the tide of antihunters? One more crossbow hunter means one more against antis and one less possible anti. Why be so narrow minded? Why don't you and your associates go out and encourage others to hunt with traditional equipment instead of bashing other forms of archery. In other words it is far more contructive and productive to encourage and enlighten then to criticize. BTW you never said you hunted with a crossbow, you did elude to that fact but I must say some of your comments about the comparison to "guns" and the range shows that you either did not hunt with a crossbow, you were not properly instructed or you are irresponsible. I will say that from you posts you appear to be intellegent so I doubt it was irresponsibility. Again sorry I will not post on this thread again, neither will I read this for obvious reasons. |
RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
Wow! There are some great posts here from both sides of the creek. The only thing that I wish to reiterate in my own words from the previous posts is that the pro-crossbow camp is not lobbying for MANDATORY CROSSBOW USE, only FREEDOM OF CHOICE. The point has been excellently made by many of you. The crossbow hunting opportunity is about being able to choose whatever bow you want to use, even the crossBOW. To deny that the crossBOW is not a bow, reflects poorly on ones credibility. To claim that it is easier to use is also incorrect. To claim that it is easier to shoot consistently would be more accurate. And if the crossBOW is so much more effective, accurate and efficient, then why is the percentage of animals taken by vertical archery and horizontal archer virtually the same? I will tell you why! Because the success of an archer, regardless of what bow he is shooting is not based on the weapon, itself. It is based on the skill of the archer and his or her ability to get close enough to an animal to inflict a mortal wound. The weapon has nothing to do with enhancing his ability. Woodsmanship is a skill that must be learned from many long hours spent in the woods, making tons of mistakes trying to get yourself within shooting range of a whitetail. A crossbow is easier because one doesn’t have to draw it back! No, but one has to lift it to his or her shoulder to aim, which generates about the same amount of movement as raising my Renegade to full draw from my bow holster. And if one draws their vertical bow back or raise their crossbow to his shoulder when the deer is looking at him, then he still has a lot to learn about bowhunting in general. There are advantages and disadvantages to each style of bow. That is a fact! Again the question is not what bow should be allowed or disallowed, one should be able to use the bow that he chooses without his fellow hunter saying, "You can’t use that because I don’t like it or I don’t think it is right." The only person who care what you think is you. And as long as there is not a crossbow hunter sitting in your treestand when you go out to hunt, then what another chooses to hunt with shouldn’t be, again I repeat, "shouldn’t be" any of your business. Oh, by the way, I would be right by your side dealing with the trespasser in your treestand regardless of what weapon he was using. To violate another’s stand – well that just isn’t right! How would you feel if the crossbow camp was doing more than working towards a freedom of choice. Besides that worthy goal, they were including the elimination of vertical archery because so many vertical archers don’t practice enough, aren’t able to hit a pie plate with three consecutive shots at twenty yards (which will be taken care of because we would also lobbying for mandatory accuracy qualification in order to be able to buy an archery license) and are wounding and crippling too many deer. If those items were added to our entire agenda, those who oppose the crossbow would be sucking wind so hard it would be vacuuming the enamel right off their teeth. We can’t jeopardize their rights to hunt with a vertical bow! But they, however, are perfectly within their rights to jeopardize our freedom to choose the weapon of our choice. A very interesting concept. No one in the crossbow camp is mandating that from this point on you can’t use your vertical bow – ever again. We are just asking that we be allowed to use the bow of our own choice. Oh, and I have been hearing a lot of, "Well then why not open the season up to any weapon, guns included?" For Pete’s sake, my dog knows the difference between the sound of a gun being shot and a bow being shot. I can only hope that any mature, rational adult would know the same. In Minnesota, the minute gun season opens up, the bowhunting is pretty much done, because the deer change their habits and go nocturnal for the rest of the season. If anyone thinks a crossbow is the same as a gun, then he or she posses an I.Q. under 50 and is void of recognitive skills or is just plain ornery, enjoys being obnoxious and looking like the dumbest rock in the box. Once again, this subject has fired up my coals and I promised myself I wasn’t going to climb on my soap box, anymore. Sorry, people. |
RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
But Daniel, who are you to say my opinion causes me to have an IQ of 50. I am optics engineer. I don't think a person with IQ of 50 could ever do that. Your a guy with a webpage trying to make a name for himself. Everything you say is just opinion. You make some articles. We do the same on here everyday.
I mean if I person can't figure out what I am talking about when I compare it to a gun, he or she posses an I.Q. under 50 and is void of recognitive skills or is just plain ornery, enjoys being obnoxious and looking like the dumbest rock in the box. I mean that person looks rather stupid. I am not talking about noice. One of the toughest challeges in taking game with an actual bow, is the ability to stand up,form, release, torque (most are part of form), and holding that bow and stay on target. If you get past these challeges, then at point, crossbows and bows are equal. The crossbow you elimated everything, and you got arifle without the delay in time, and the noice. And the crossbow I shot,10X, was so loud, you thought it was a gun.I mean if somebody can't figure that out, then he or she posses an I.Q. under 50 and is void of recognitive skills or is just plain ornery, enjoys being obnoxious and looking like the dumbest rock in the box. |
RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
I've written half a dozen different responses to this thread but erased them all. Frankly, I discovered back when this forum was opened that when such a question is raised as on this thread, it'sbecause people are less interested in knowing the WHY as they are in simply having a chance tobash the other side. Especially when they've got a supposed'safe haven' where the other side can't defend itself.
Anyway, I think nobody has said anything more succinct and to the point than what awshucks wrote: ...I've come to believe there is always a bozo on the bus. |
RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
AMEN, ART! AND I READILY ADMIT THAT I AM ONE OF THEM! I THINK IT'S KIND OF LIKE HAVING A DISABILITY OR SOMETHING.

RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
Actually, I've found this thread to be very interesting to read. The comments are refreshing and thought provoking. I've been hunting for 58 years and still find the time in the woods with a rifle, pistol, or my crossbow to be thrilling. Yet, what little I fish bores me to death. We need more people, both male and female, coming into the sport; not only to boost our numbers but to secure the future of the sport for generations to come. Does it really make a difference as to what they use to particiate? No, it doesn't! It does matter if they do not particiapte; because, we loose in the long run.

RE: What's up with X-bow haters?
Big Country: I can uderstand your frustration at todays youth wanting to go straight to a crossbow. I spent a large portion of my youth shooting a stick bow. 25# lemon wood long bow. I even made my own bow from osage orange, which we in Illinois called "hedge" My arrows came from the center of a lilac bush, tipped w/ home-made blunts from cut down .410 shells, w/ pieces of corn wedging them in the center, followed by Elmer's glue to hold it all in place. Had to ride my bike a mile or so to get chicken feathers to fletch. At the time, this was all that was available. Circa 1956. A few years later, the compounds came on the scene and changed archery forever. Whether for better or worse still seems to be debated. I feel sorry for todays young people that will probably never get to have the fun that I did. Having taken over 30 deer in my life, I'm no longer excited by the harvest. The one little rabbit I got w/ home-made bow probably is the most memorable of all. Now, the old body is slowing down. Shoulder is shot from massive rotator cuff injury, knees are full of arthritus, I have to hunt in areas where I can track stuff down, which in my part of Arkansas can be a challenge. I collect my venison by sitting in a ground blind w/ a single shot .223. I head shoot deer out to 200 yds and when I pull the trigger, they drop on the spot. That is not really hunting in my book, just getting meat. Many a day I go sit in a tree stand and never see a deer. Once in a while I'll see them, but they are outta range. But, I'm hunting. There are alot of guys in my boat. Some qualify for the proper paper work, some don't. I think I speak for many when I say we just want our rights as Americans to have the freedom of choice to use what ever form of archery equipment we want. You can do the same, whether it be a stick and string and 15-20 yd shots or the latest greatest compound w/ 40 yd capabilities. I don't intend to try to make you see things my way, and I respect your opinions regardless of how they compare to mine. My gripe in the whole debate is that we all have much more in common than we have differences, and I believe now it's more important than everthan ever that we find some kind of common ground and stick together. I have two xbows, 12 acres, a guest house 4 1/2 months of archery season. Come on down and give it a try.
