What did ya hunt with before the CB?

See we are getting a little dry in here so I tried to think of a new question. I was just wandering what did you hunt with before you started to use a CB? How long did you deer hunt before the CB? and one last one, why did you take up the CB?
For me I started hunting when I was nine. It was also the first year my dad decided to start deer hunting, we used guns. We new nothing about deer hunting and had a hard time at it. We hunted until I was fifteen before my dad shot the first doe. When I was sixteen a friend gave me an old compound and i shot it alot but sucked at it. Probally more me but some has to go to the bow. So my dad feeling sorry for me since I went out alot with the thing and had no luck he bought me my first CB a horton super mag! I shot my first deer two years later and have been hooked ever since. Just thought we needed something to talk about.

Well you lucky son of a bow! I wish I had the luxury of a hunting dad.
I started hunting when I was 20 when I was in forestry school. All that talk about game management and hanging around quite a few hunters was too much to bear. So I started hunting with a 22 and a 12 gauge (for chucks and grouse). It wasn't until 10 years later that I met my best friend/hunting partner and major troulbe maker (Frank). Frank is a springer breader/trainer. We hunted birds mostly then a few years later went to Wyoming, Colorado, New Mexico (rifles and handguns) and Ontario andd Alberta for big game(rifle and compound). About 15 years ago I bought a crossbow and a compound. I was always more accurate with the xbow so I hunted with that more when I wasn't hunting with Frank. About ten years ago we started hunting big game with muzzle loaders and specialized slug guns. So now I hunt big game with a crossbow, compound, muzzle loader, shot gun, hand gun and a rifle. I also do a lot of goose, duck and turkey hunting with my 10 and 12 gauge. You can see some pics on Frank's website www.springvillespringers.com. You'll see me on the top of the first hunting page and other pages. Hey! No giving me the gears when you see me!

Sorry. That is Frank with a buck he shot at 225 yards with a savage muzzle loader in Ontario, Canada
I am on the top of the first page of hunting. On all other hunting pages except turkey and big game...go figure. Frank does this hunting stuff professionally but I am not a customer, just a constant partner in crime.

I .
I have lived in ontario all my lifeand am yet to hear of any mule deer shot in this province. I'm also going out on a limb here (knowing very little about muzzle loaders) but 225 yards seems like a far shot.[&:]

Nice buck and turkey none the less.:)

RE: What did ya hunt with before the CB?

Well I shot a double barreled sling shot with spit wads before I got my CB. LOL. No, I used my old faithful Darton Mag. compound bow for years after using my Bear recurve earlier. Only got does and a couple button heads with either one of them. But my hunting habits were different then. I used to shoot at the first deer that came close enough. Now, patience plays a very large part in my hunting and it has paid off richly. No telling how many bucks I use toscare half to death by shooting at the doe he may have been folowing. LOL. It's funny, looking back, at how muchand how long it takes to learn deer hunting to be even an avaragesuccessful hunter these days. It's not easy, but it's oh so much fun. I hunted for sixteen straight years before I killed my first deer. I'd say that is determination enough to label me a hard core deer hunter. LOL. It's a disease you know.

Spiffy you're right. I wasn't paying attention as usual. Here is the real one from Ontario... they seem to blend in... old age or too many... never too many! Its not really too long. Frank is pretty good but the Savage rifle with smokelss powder and the dead center bullets are better than him. Check out prbullets.com. These front stuffers and those bullets are pretty amazing. Sorry, that was more like 240 yards. Hard to believe but its true (I helped him drag the deer to the truck). Check out the prbullet site its a great bullet in a great rifle. There is an interesting ballistics page. My personal max distance with my Savage is 200 yrds same as my slug gun.

PS:very good Spiffy!

I was a gun only hunter , mostly muzzle loader , before i got my first crossbow , I bought it to extend my time afield . In my state the bow hunters have a six week lead on the gun hunters and a total season of 3 months . We can only use crossbows for deer during our late archery season presently due to illogical prejudice , but for any other game there's no restriction . I don't recall exactly how long I hunted deer before getting it , but it wasn't a long time .

I used a Ben Pearson fiberglass breakdown longbow until I shattered my left elbow in December of 1982. From then until July of 2003 - nothing, as far as archery was concerned. I was no longer allowed to draw a bow..... I've always hunted with a rifle and still do. I find shooting a rifle is also good crossbow practice. I also hunt with a handgun.

Hey dnk that is more like they bucks I have come to know and love. Sorry about the range thing, like I said, I don't really know much about them. ;)[&:]

I started out with shot gun and rifle for deer. 16 ga. single, 12 ga. single, then 12 ga. pump. I got into crossbow hunting after my brother in law started hunting a county close by with lots of deer. They bow hunted and alot and I wanted to get into it. I got my Horton Max Impact for my birthday and never looked back. I ended up shooting a doe and a fawn the first year.

Although I hunt a different area now and still here at home I still love it and find it a rush. We started a new farm and I got a 5 point the secondevening I was there. can't wait to go back in Oct!:)

I still hunt with guns too.

Your a good man Spiffy. There's some thing special about getting up close and personal. I like xbow hunting better than with a compound. Its like you see more just before pulling the trigger. Donno really why. Any one else like that?

GOOD GAWD Dnk, where was that desert Muley pic taken? THAT very kind of animal is why I am considering my next "travel hunt" to be for a Sonoran Desert muley in old Mexico. That is one GORGYMOUS animal right there and I dare say more attractive than ANY whitetail ever taken!!!

As for the answers, I began deerhunting at 12 with a gun. But killed my first deer @ 13 with a bow! That was in 1985 so it's been awhile...

Bow wise I still have an "old" Hoyt Deviator Carbonite that I bought new in 1997 (thank God that Golden Eagle I had bought a month earlier blew up! :D) Before I bought my TenPoint TL4 last fall I was considering buying a new Matthews or another Hoyt. Boy am I glad I changed my mind!!! LOL if I were to buy an compound tomorrow it would be a Switchback XT, but since I primarily bowhunt in TN with my TenPoint I probably will keep my old Hoyt around for out of state hunts (I usually bowhunt 1ce or 2ce a year on my family's cattle ranch in southern MO). I absolutely LOVE my TenPoint. Igrew upin the sporting/fishing business for 20 years (my brother owned two large proshops in west TN before finally closing them lastyear) but since xbows weren't legal in any of the states we live or hunted in I never was around them. But here in TN that was changed last summer! I went to work for a new shop last summer and theyare Horton and TenPoint dealers as well as Mathews and PSE compounds. 2 older fellows who worked at my brothers place also went to work for this shop and they had already shot TenPoints (Dr.s permits) for several years. So it wasn't completely unfamiliar too us, but on a much larger scale than before, lastyear was a learning experience for us all.

I didn't even buy my TL4 until bow season had already opened. I had enjoyed setting them up, sighting them in and selling and shooting them at work. So "making the switch" was very easy. Man I LOVE shooting this xbow and now sing their praises. We sold 250+ crossbows last fall compared to MAYBE 2 dozen compounds. I mean the compound bow market has just about DRIED UP in my state because of the new law. I can see where compound companies should be DEATHLY afraid of ANY new or proposed xbow regulations in any state!

One of the GREATEST things I like about the xbow is the number of new bowhunters they have brought into the sport. I can't tell you how many xbows we sold to fellows who had either quit bowhunting long agoor never had in the first place. Now more than ever our sport needs new and increased participants in ANY segment of it.

;)

Wewy well said Red! Couldn't worded it better. Maybe that is the a lobying group that holds xbow hunters back in various states and provences. Either way what you said about the increase participants is very true and wonderful.
About the picture a friend in Alberta sent it to me to get me going. I have no idea where it was taken. Oh yeah!!!! What a nice dream.

RE: What did ya hunt with before the CB?

Well, lets see, I started hunting with MY Dad at 5, toting a BB gun while he shot squirrels. Started archery in high school and shot an old Bear recurve (still have it) until about 12 years ago. Never did get into compounds. Took up handguns for everything for a while, then stopped hunting altogether when I became disabled. Started back with guns about3 years ago and just this fall bought a crossbow. No luck with it yet but just getting back in the woods is good enough for me.
