Idea just for fun

I would like to know how many of you out there make their own jerke?
I like to make it and would like to make a little contest.

Will need everyones input but here is the idea
What do you think about haveing a jerke cookoff? Just for those members of this board.
Each of us can make our own jurkey and send out one sample to each of the others who sign up. Each would be given a ID number and addresses to send these to. We would vote on taste and other things. These would be sent into a main judge who would compile the information and he/she would then announce the winner.
A plack or ??? would be given to the winner.
What are your thoughts/ideas/interest?

Could be fun.
Rick

Well, 10 other hits and no other replies. I really thought it would be fun. Those interested would come up with rules and we could use numbers and not names so it was not a popular vote as no one would know where they came from. Lots of question to be answered but again could be a hoot and liven up this place.
Come on people at least add your $.02 worth when you view this post.
Thanks Tree climber.

:DThanks for the recipe but the thought here was on a jerke cook off:eek::D.
What do you think about this?
Thanks again.

One more time.
Just some thoughts on how to do this.
Need at least 10 people
One person neutral to collect and send data
Only homemade jerkey no store bought or made by somone else. Just a fun contest
Each person given a number
Each person makes and sends samples to other contestents who will judge jerkey on taste, exct...... send info to judge who does the above and in the event of a tie will be the tie breaker vote.
Winner gets nice plack or somthing like that.
Open to suggestions but need people who want to do this
Just a thought

Now what are yours Yes or no and maybe why.
Thanks again,
Rick

Well phil it doesnt seem like we have enough to have a good contest. I thought it would be fun.
I feel that we would need at least 10 to enter and one to keep the records. I have a idea on a small plack for the winner. We could do this each year and hopefully it would grow to about 20 people
I can see some possible problems but I think we could work them out.

If anyone out there is interested contact me.
;)hunter rich take your mind out of the gutter, slap it a few times, wash it off, do a virus scan and reinstall :D

I like the idea, but the only jerky I make is not a homemade recipe so its not real unique. Otherwise, I like the idea.

Well I think 15 would be a good number to shoot at. That way if some drop out or just no show we could still have a good contest.
For those of you that are interested please say so. Then start sugesting rules and what to judge the jerkey on. Like taste ect...
Need to get your e-mail so we can contact eachother directly if possible.
So far
1. NO MIXES allowed must be made from scratch
2. NO STORE made jerkey
3. NOTHING weard like, Well you can think of them.
4. MUST be made in a clean cooking area as we do not want anyone to get sick.
5. Each person will be isued a number at random. Samples are to be labled with this
number. No names
6. Your recipe must be sent to the neutral and at the end of the contest copies will be
sent to all who entered the contest.
Ok, now its your turn
Have you ever been to a contest like this or for salsa or chili? What kind of rules did they have? Any suggestions or ideas?
It was suggested that a collection be made to cover the price of the plaque.
Could even use some help here. Anyone out there good with wood?
Well must get back to my to do list of things. I am on page 1 of what seems to be a total of 100. Just not enough time for one person to do it all.
Contact me.
Thanks,
Rick

I don't have a jerke recipe but I would like to see the ones used.

I would like to make some jerke without sugar.

Why not have a small entry fee for the entrys that would pay for the plaque ?

Say 15 entrys X ? that would pay for how ever much a plaque would cost .

And get a proffesanal plaque made.

Well theres my $.02 cents worth.

Oh yea posting in offseason for every one to see this is a good Idea.

And who would you get to judge the contest ?

Good Luck

:DWho uses sugar in their jerky[:@][:o]

jrbsr, Jerky is simple to make. I will have a little problem making a recipe becouse I just have a base that I use and add to it.
Do a search on jerky there is a lot of info out there. Look at the basics and add some spices that you like. When I first tryed I made several small batches. Each one I made had a number and what was in it. Several turned out bad and I learned from that. Hint, Never add dry spice to the meat after you soak it, bad news.
Watch useing alot of salt or salty products
Well Its time to get ready for work.
Good Luck
Rick

With 15 contestants you could have everyone get in a large circle and have like a circle "jerky" thing, for your "cookoff" thing..

I won't be making jerky until about end of Jan. to Feb. If the contest doesn't start until then, then I am in.

RE: Idea just for fun

if we can't get a entry fee ; say $1.00 to get a plaque for best, then matbe I could make one in my shop. I do a lot of woodwork(build furniture and stuff).
I don't think anyone would object to $1.00.

as for the time limit,I think we will be into Jan. befor you know it.it will take a couple mo's. to get it all together and working.

we need to get one person to be the outside man, issue the #'s for each person and to notify them of all rules and the other stuff involved.
I love to make it and eat it.so if no one else wants to,I would be will to help with that.

Who ; just let me know what I can do.

Well do we try it with what we have or what? If we go with the names so far then we need to find a place to hash out rules and what ever.
I need everyones thoughts on this.
