RE: korean food
I used to eat the fried squid and liked it. but i tried the squid jerky and no way. what about the fish jerky? i used to go to a restaraunt in angjung ni and they would cook pork and put all kinds of veg. on the table. you know the 1000 kinds of kim chee. you would put the stuff in red leaf lettuce and roll it up and eat away. my buddys wife was korean and she would cook stuff but i cant remember what it was called. lots of stuff though and some was pretty good.
the worst i ever ate was in honduras i would get full of adult refreshments and buy what i thought was beef and onions fried. this old hondo woman was selling us monkey. i always wondered why it was so chewy ,i just thought it was tough beef. i never ate iguana but i watched them clean one once . |
RE: korean food
I'VE HAD IT BEFORE, IT WAS SPICY!!!! A LOT OF THE GUYS I WORK WITH WERE STATIONED OVER THERE AND BROUGHT BACK ORENTIEL WIVES. AND MAN DO THEY KNOW HOW TO COOK, I'VE ALSO TRIED THE SQUID JERKEY, NOT TO BAD.
|
RE: korean food
robb theres just something about breaking those tintacles(?) off . and i like the red meat jerky better no fishy taste.
joel is everything made out of rice still. rice potatoe chips, rice candy, rice peanut brittle, rice , rice, rice. i'll bet that burger king and kfc , and mcdonalds is still the same in itaewon as it was when i was there. boy i wish they had the internet when i was there. it wouldnt have been so bad. |
RE: korean food
heheheh... ahhhh.. good ole itaewon.. i live probably a mile from itaewon???? maybe more like 3/4 mile... anywayz i can walk to itaewon in roughly 10 mintutes (fast pace).. area i live is called pogwandong (bo gwan dong)...
burgar king is just burgar king (i heard there was a restaurant on top of it once)... popeye's is to the right and accross the street from bgk... ummm.. micky d's is still the same... OHHHH ITAEWON SUBWAY STATION!!!! finally they got it in last year... man its nice.... except its like 500 feet under ground (u go down 2 elevators and 3 flights of stairs)... other than that itaewon is still itaewon... yes korean wives can cook.. but korean girls look kinda nasty when they get old.... as for rice... they got real potatoe chips yet lots of things are still rice... there are places where u can buy real american food but you gotta pay (not black market.. just imports)... other than that i dunno what else to say.. if u got any other korea questions post 'em here.... i'll check this topic often.. oh.. and SAHS lost the far east championship... to some acadamy school....i dunno if any of ya'll care.. im glad SAHS got beat... they're a bunch of mouthy army brats.. |
RE: korean food
I rather enjoyed the time I spent in South Korea, I was stationed in 2ID Land at Camp Stanley. I just left there in May 2001. I had a blast and traveled alot and ate all sorts of food. I made friends with some of the senior KATUSA's and had a blast.

RE: korean food
Up there around the Z. nope i was at humphreys. i can't say it was all bad but i wouldnt repeat it. went to casey once ,glad i wasnt there.
|
RE: korean food
i dont know the military terms... the Z??? ive only been on base a few times (probably could count it with both hands)..
|
RE: korean food
DMZ, my friend. The Demilitarized Zone. I had the unfortunate pleasure of having to live up there for 17 days. I was a little farther south of the DMZ in a town called Uijongbu, about 25 kilometers from the Z. Although we did live fire up there alot. Kind of one of those show of force things. Nothing like watching a missle rip through a valley at MACH 2. Lord knows I wouldnt want to be on the recieving end!
Andrew I dont make the plans, I make them happen! |
RE: korean food
used to fly it. one of only few that could fly along the Z. phoenix airlines. 751 st MI.we had those little listening posts on mountains up there.we made sure thay had food and rotated people. had a picture of one our hueys with a BIG bullet hole in the nose that got to close . n. korea didnt like that. the picture hung in the op's as a reminder that we were in korea.
|
RE: korean food
i lived in uijonbu for two years.... i guess nothing is different around the DMZ its been a year since i've been up that direction.
uijonbu i way more crowded now.. i heard it used to be all spaced out, but its looking more and more like seoul. |
RE: korean food
I had an Army buddy that married a Korean chick when he was there and brought her back.
They had me over for dinner all the time. I'll agree with you, joel, that the food looks nasty but boy is it good!!! I must say, I do love Korean food. I also LOVE kimchi but it gave me the absolute WORST heartburn I've ever had. |
RE: korean food
If you have not had Korean barbq you have not lived. I will see if I can find the recipe.

RE: korean food
ok guyz.... u lived on base... im living in the actual korean economy. u havent tried the nasty bad stuff.. kimchi is ok... but u guyz havent seen the bad side of korean food just trust me on that. there are a few dishes that are pretty good.. there are LOTS that are just plain nasty!!!!
nastiest kimchi i've ever seen was with like rotten mushrooms in it. the mushrooms looked like what a worm looks like after sitting in the little plastic can for 2 months (u know just kinda elmers glue like) hehehehehe... like i said, if u like sea weed and really spicey peppery food then korean food might be your fancy. _ _ _ _ _ ROMANS 16:19 SAYS! RE: korean food
oh joel your wrong.
me and my round eye wife lived in the vill! had a korean landlord in his building. i also had the heat in the floor, all tile bathroom that you on some occasions had to smell the methane ripping out of the drains, little frig,no oven. i lived right out there with them.rice paddies on two sides off the building. and you talk about kimchee have you seen them when they get the cabbage?a mini truckload, they cut it up , and then put in pots and sealed them. they spiced it up of course. AND BOY when they bust the top off one of them pots after fermenting for a couple of months WHEW!!! yep used to buy stuff at the corner store(for those that havent been to korea i dont have time to explain)on weekends when i didnt want to go on base. and yes i have had seaweed ,roll up some rice, maybe beansprout kimchee and not to bad. the only thing we avoided was the water .we got our drinking water on post. not to many people can say they have toted a five gallon jug of water on a ten speed bikes back rack(you had to have one for water ,gro,clothes,etc...)about four or five a week. i know what your going through brother and someday you WILL look back and have an appreciation for your life that others dont have. there are probably a few things WE experienced that you aren't. but thats best. we were older and dumber.you remember the soju question? well it's a rice based liquer that will loop your world. you never know what the proof is going to be, so you dont know how drunk your going to get.anyway dont try it,bad headache. enjoy joel as bad as i talk about korea, ENJOY! |
RE: korean food
well.. i still hate sea weed. hahaahaha... and we don't have access to base at all. so there's certain things that u're able to get that we're never able to get. lets just say i havent had a good steak in 6 months... beef is still $10/lb.

RE: korean food
OH man i'm sorry joel!!! how do you do it. i could not have made it without base previleges. you need to find a nice Gi to help you out. i would have bought your grocerys so you didnt have to rely on the korean market. they didnt have any standards like the usda set here. i feel for you now ! sorry.

RE: korean food
NOOOOOOOO! i know what your talking about but no way. i used to work with two korean mechanics that were civilians.they were old school. both had been in the korean war. i used to get sick watching them eat. i watched mr. yi boil his ramen noodles, there good i eat them, but he had minnows (live) that he put in at the last minute. happy eating! they would eat fish that we use as bait.
the egg thing. they used to display them in cases in front of stores. the little duck or chicken or whatever would be busted out to show the quality. oh and if you went to the right market you would see dog. yeap rover ,skinned, gutted and laying there for your inspection.now the ones i saw had the head and paws left close by. this was so you could make sure this was your kind of dog. yeah now that joel pointed out that he lives on the korean economy literally i respect him more. don't get me wrong i'm sure in the last ten years some things have changed. but not that much . koreans have lived this way for thousands of years. i guess they are on to something you see more old koreans than old americans. you noted this joel?
