Looking for a Butcher
 

Just got a phone call from my husband in northern Maine. He just bagged a 5 point 180LB buck...and he wants me to find a butcher. Will any butcher take on a deer from a hunter for butchering? Any idea of the general cost? As part of our package, we'd like deer hotdogs made as well. Can anyone give me some ideas as where to find this service? Thanks.

Your best bet is to call your local butcher, or one in your area. If they wont/dont process deer, then they can usually direct you to someone who does. A lot of times people run a deer butcering/processing business out of their homes. This worked for me in Vermont. It should work for you too. Also you could look around online.

Thanks for the great advice. We live in a big city, so I'm hoping there are no restrictions regarding this type of butchering here. I just put a call into a friend who hunts and is a member of a motorcycle group. Someone there is bound to know someone. Thanks again.

Agree with VT! Start at your local meat butcher. Not Grocery store. Place where you can buy sides of beef butchered and packaged and even frozen stored if you don't have the space. They will ussually do deertoo.

Thank you for replying. I am in the process of finding a local butcher. A friend of ours is also asking around with his hunting buddies or a good butcher. We won't have any problems storing the meat, as we have an industrial freezer in our basement. I just hope we can get "deer dogs" made. They are better than commercial hot dogs.

Happy to help. Ive never had a venison hotdog...but they sure sound good.

Next time you get your deer butchered, ask for some to be made. You'll be glad you did. They are terrific!
