Whats your choice of safety harness?
Ok I have not used a safety belt in years. I know BAD, but they were to confusing and complete hell to untangle and feed through. But now with all the new complete harnesses available and a wife and 2 kids later I feel it's the time to watch out a little more.
So what from your experiences or knowledge are the easiest and quickest but still the safetest belts available? I was looking at the Hunter safety system with the full vest. Any help please? |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I use the Seat-O-The Pants harness that I got when I bought my Viper XLS. I tested it out and it works well. Some people like the vests because they don't get tangle, but I save the money and fold it up.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I know it is not smart at all, but I have never used one, I think I will start, so i will be watching this post for some ideas.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I fell 21ft. when my belt type restraint failed and was lucky enough to walk away with a few bruises. After that I switched to the "seat of the pants" and loved it. I got a Hunter Safty System for Christmas last yeat and so far it seams to be pretty good.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
This will be interesting as I just went from a 4 point chest to a full body harness. I'd like to see what everybody is using and likes.
I've heard some good things about the seat o the pants one. When converting, I first bought an API full body but returned it b/c the lineman's belt did not detach like the photos showed and it seemed like it would get in the way and/or tangle while on stand. So I returned it for another one. I can't remember which one I ended up with b/c I haven't been home to look at it yet or test it. Soooo, what's everybody using??? |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
Summits Seat O the pants is my favorite. I use the fastback system. This helps keep the harness from becoming tangled in your pack. It's very comfortable and works well.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I use a seats o the pants harness, and about a year ago (maybe longer) on this message board, someone posted a link to a rope system that allowed a hunter to always be connected to the tree, kind of like a mountain climber rig. It is very easy to setup, and inexpensive too. I use permanent stands, so the I put the rope up each season, and it is good to go. I feel very secure climbing into the stand, and the way it is setup, it doesn't get in the way of my bow.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
seat of the pants. fell 25 ft...LUCKY to walk away with only a few broken ribs, a concussion, a broken wrist, seperated shoulders, and internal bleeding...yikes

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
We use the chest harnesses, never fallen with one, so I can't exactly say how well they work. I also know that some treestand mfr. are including harnesses with their stands. Gorilla for sure, I ended up with four full body style harnesses last summer. I am going to modify a cheap vest by sewing one into it. the vest would only serve to keep the dang thing easy to put on! Just an idea.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I may be mistaken, but I believe it's not a requirement by law that all manufactureres includes harnesses with their stands. If not, then most of them are doing it to avoid being held liable when someone falls out of a tree and hurts themself while using their product.
Personally I've always just used some cheapo harness that came with a stand I got awhile back, but I'm really thinking about switching over to the Hunter's Safety System this year. I've heard a lot of good things about it. |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I have a seat of the pants. I have a friend that is a certified arborist so He climbs around in a lot of trees. I have mod. my tree attachment, with his knot knowledge, to be more user friendly. Instead of having a strap on the harnass and a strap that goes around the tree, I have one peice of climbers rope that has 2 prusic knots that go around the tree and are adj. to give the desired lengh from the truck.
I will post some pics when I can. |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I dawn my superman cape under my camo's. If that fails, I have an upper body harness.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I bought the Seat O the Pants from recommendations on here and love it. The Gorilla, API and Ameristep harnesses are uncormfortable and restrict your shooting from angles quite a bit. Since I got the SOP I haven't even touched the others.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
i have a seat of the pants harness from summit. once you use it a few times you can usually figure it out how to put it on. what i might do is where the harness under my top layer of camo and just have the attachment out. i'm not sure whether this is a good idea but i thought it would save the trouble of putting it on in the field.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
Another vote for Seat-O-The-Pants. Easy to put on, comfy, and safe.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I use the Summit harness that came with my stand , Liked it so much that I bought a second .( not the seat of the pants)
Very simple to put on and use. Last fall I fell while wearing the harness ,all I got was a few scratchs . Would have been ugly without a harness ,several thorn bushs under my stand. Johnch |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
Is this the seat o the pants everyone is talking about?
http://www.keystonecountrystore.com/...=174&mitem=184 Or is this another brand? Sounds like it is between this and the Hunter safety system. Anyone with the Hunter safety system can you tell me if it constricts getting those tough angle shots? |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
Tribal,
I have the hunter saftey system and I just love it. It truely fits like a normal vest! It has leg straps that use car style buckles to secure it and the normal snap clips for the front two around your chest. It's very easy to put on either over or under your jacket as it has an adjustment range. It also has plenty of pockets and a deer drag system built in (a strap is supplied that attaches to an "O" ring on the back at the bottom) I have not had to use the drag yet but I bet it would come in handy as a last resort if needed. If you can make a shot with a normal vest on, you make the same shot with the hunter safety system vest on as well. To me, except for the leg straps it's like wearing a normal vest. They even have a reversible model with orange on one side and camo on the other for use with gun hunting. Great product for sure. I paid $99.97 for mine Here is the link. http://www.deerhuntinggear.net/Safety_Vest.htm |

Tribal-
The product in the link you posted is a step above the standard Seat-of-the-Pants safety harness that most have spoken about. I have the standard version which is basically the same as the one you posted, but it costs $60 instead of $100. I like mine very much. I just wonder how much better the $100 is... I agree with you though, with a wife and two kids, it's time to STRAP UP! My sister's neighbor spent about 6 months in a coma after falling out of his stand last fall and now he's paralyzed from the neck down. It's time to take every step possible to protect yourself. Others are depending on you. |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I have tried the HSS vest but took it back as the vest was very heavy. I think it would be ideal if it were lighter as it wasn't any fun wearing it in the hotter months. I use the belt that came with my summit viper. I like it but it is cumbersome at best to put on as it always gets tangled up in my pack. I did fall out of a stand once while wearing it and my only drawback is that when you are suspended in the air it is hard to get undone and hug the tree down. I think that if you wore it under your outer garment and fell you might be in a bit of a bind trying to get out of it and hug your way down the tree. I use mine like most people and put it under my clothing with just the teather coming out but really would like another way to use it. Just my 2 cents.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
Seat O the Pants is the one that I have found to be the best. Excellent fit and comfortable and doesn't interfere with shooting. Can't tell that I even have it on in the stand.

RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
arkansasbowhunter,
They make an all mesh hunter safety system for those hotter climates as well as a smaller lighter version. Check out the link on my last post. I for one don't even think about the weight because it's a vest and it just adds another layer of clothing. If I was wearing just a harness (like I used to) I would have to put on another layer of clothes so I think it's a wash as far as weight goes. In the early season (Oct, Nov.) I just wear a few layers under it and during the colder months (Dec. Jan.) I wear a heavy jacket over it. I never thought of trying to get out of my harness if I fell, I just figured I could reach over to my ladder and get back my footing. Something to think about I guess. I hope I never find myself in that situation. Either way the vest adjusts so I could wear it over my heavy jacket if I want to. |
RE: Whats your choice of safety harness?
I have the vest version of the seat of the pants. I have the strap one and it was fine but with the vest I can put my rope and some other lightweight things in it and not have to carry a pack in anymore. If you want, I'll sell you my strap version for less than you can buy one anywhere else. It was used about 5 times, I've never fallen with it, and its in perfect condition. If you or anyone else is interested just email me. Good luck with whatever you get, they are important things to have in my opinion.
