Urban Archery Season In VA

The urban archery season for Blacksburg, Va starts this Saturday. I got permission from a couple of farmers to hunt their land. This evening I drove up to the farm to try and figure out where the deer were coming into the field. When I got there, I saw about 25 does standing at the front of the field! The nice thing is, these deer have never had pressure on them and they let me watch them graze the alfalfa from about 150 yards away. About 30 minutes from dark, I looked to the back of the field and saw what appeared to be an 8 or 10 point buck! Unfortunately, we can't take bucks during the urban archery season. I guess they're afraid people will pass on too many does waiting for the shot on a buck. It may be the hardest thing I ever have to do if I have to just sit and watch this deer under my stand while waiting for a shot on a doe. I'll be going after my first deer with a bow so I'm not going to get too picky. I'll consider any deer a trophy and remember it for the rest of my life!

p.s. The other great thing about the Urban Archery season is that they are encouraging us to take as many deer as we can during the two week season!!!

By George, I think Hokie3's got the idea!

Good Luck on the upcoming season.

Hey Hokie3, if you need any help just let me know, I am not to far from you, LOL. good luck this weekend. I live in Bedford county and don't have any &quot;urban&quot; areas I have access to, so I will have to wait until Oct 5. I agree you have the right Idea, I am proud of every single deer I kill with a bow, be it a doe, button buck, or monster 10 pointer. I am still waiting on the last one though!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hey 5 shot. Are there Elk in Bedford? I was talking to a guy who said they were in that area. Is there any public land there that hold them if so? I want a shot on some elk. Never tasted elk and besides, I hear they have pure ivory on the back of there jaw.
Now to Hookie, good luck this Saturday. I'll be in the woods this Saturday too. Like you said, you can harvest as many does as you want but you'll have to use your tags unless the farmer has some Dmap tags or kill permits. Get some bonus tags (antleress only) and save a buck tag or two cause later in the season, 5 shots 10 point may walk under your stand.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

There he was broad side at 20 yards. I drew, released and....

Their is a lot of national forest land in Bedford county, but I have not heard of any elk this far east. I know a fellow killed one last year or the year before last and becuase of that Virgina had to add the &quot;elk laws&quot; to the hunting regs. LOL I wouldn't mind a crack at one myslef. NOW YOU GUYS STAY AWAY FROM MY 10 POINT!!<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

I don't know how far east they have traveled but they are thick in Wise county.

Hey 5 shot, I will trade a Southwest Virginia Elk hunt for a crack at that &quot;monster 10&quot; of yours!:)

5shot...If I didn't have such a hard time getting permission to hunt the land, I'd say come on out. The guy had already given two other guys(friends) permission to hunt before I asked. Part of the condition is that I don't get in their way. Hopefully they don't plan on hunting Saturday, because tongight I saw 20 more does and fawns and two six point bucks. Brought the camera this time so I'll get the pics developed and share with everyone soon. They let me get to about 70-100 yards in my car today. The only problem with the land is that it is mostly fields. The only woods really aren't on his property. He has a few trees on his side of the fence along the woodline so I'm pretty sure I can get my loc-on in there. I know, I know....It should already be up....but I wasn't sure if his friends were going to put their stands there. If they haven't by tomorrow at 11:00am, mine is going up anyway!!!<img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Hokie, I feel your pain. Good hunting land is hard to find anymore. The Urban hunting is even harder with the 10 continuos acre rule. I can hold off till Oct, I think<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle> You better get that stand up and be ready, Saterday is fast aproching! Sprintflyer, I ain't giving up my &quot;monster 10 point&quot; for anything! I am cultivating him right now. He's only a spike this year, but in 6 or 7 years I think he will be ready for me.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
