If you can talk the talk....you'd better.....
....Walk, the walk.
It's one thing to talk it, but it's another thing to actually walk it. I passed up a nice 10 point tonight. He was a basic 8 point, 17" inside, nice dark antlers and matching split brow tines. I've got him on film from a few nights before season here opened. He's a nice 2.5 year old deer. Not quite what I'm looking for. I saw a beauty a few days ago. It's hard passing up deer like that, especially when it's not on your property and the chances of him actually surviving through the season are slim....but there's a chance...something that he wouldn't have if I would have taken him tonight.

That speaks volumes my friend. That's the biggest problem while many will not take large racked animals.
Number one, they shoot small ones that don't get a chance to grow. If the animal is passed, it stands a chance of growing but won't if it's shot by you.
Number two, if you shoot the small ones and tag out, your done til next season and then you shoot a small one again and tag out. It's an ongoing cycle. That's fine if all you ever want is small racked animals for the meat but I don't know of anyone who will pass a shot a P&Y buck and shoot the small 4 pt standing beside him. Perhaps pass the 4 pt and 1/2 hour later, booner walks in.
Happen to my taxidermist friend. It's his busy season, he was taking the first racked buck that walked by. A 4 pt came in to 20 yards, he drew and just as he was ready to shoot, a huge 8 pt ran in chased the 4pt off and all my friend had to do was turn slightly and tagged out on a huge buck he full mounted. What if he'd shot the little Y buck and watched the big one run off at the shot.......
YOU HAFTA PASS THEM IF YOU WANT BIGGER ONES....not only to let them grow, but to save you tag. IF not, enjoy the meat.
Well done James Vee.

Good Job James. It's hard to do that, but it's something I admire when people do do it.

Congrats James
it is hard to pass up a buck like that but all in all he was not the one you wanted and you would have probably regreted taking him.
All good things come to those who wait.
On my last 3 visits to my spot I have sat and watched the buck that I want he has been coming in late mornings I am patient I will wait for him. Besides that I have 2 doe tags I can fill while I am waiting for him.

Congratulations, and believe me, I know how hard that can be. I let an eight-pointer which would have scored in the 120-ish range which I judged to be about two and a half years old walk last year. I sometimes still question that, though overall I'm glad I did it.
Now, like you said, if he only made it through to this year. Watch out!
Discipline -- not desire -- determines destiny.

CUDO's to you!!! I love to hear that some of us aren't all out just to fill tags. I mean that is ok and all but it seems that many guys post about everything is trophy, etc. However I doubt that filling tags is our true motive to love this sport.
I here you, great points. If some of us don't give these 120's time to grow, then big/mature ones would never be around to dream about and chase. I mean to each his own, if you are tickled with a buck or a 120 then good. However many of us want and maybe even expect more. I laugh at guys who say I just couldn't afford to let him walk, but yet say man I sure wish I could get a trophy. Hunting present one but many opportunities, it is really what you do with those that create success. To me as a "Trophy Hunter" I can't wait to try and take it to the next level, I love the whole hunting experience, the meat and the harvest are a reward, not a given. Plus for 9 months of the year I think about it and finally those 3 months I can do it, why settle!
Oh I know you "Trophy Hunters"...blah blah blah!!!! I hear it all the time and well what you do to make your hunting experience successful and rewarding is great, however it doesn't translate to me. Plus the topics states it, if you say I will, then don't say well I settled!
Happy hunting and have a safe season!!!

Congrats on the discipline!! That can be a hard thing to do!
I still say , to each his own!(in case wolfen68 reads this<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>)
I have a question for you guys. Last year I had to let alot of bucks walk because I was after a certain buck. Well , when I told my buddies of the bucks I let walk , it got to the point where I dont think they believed me anymore<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> Anyway , this year I'm thinking about taking a camera with me to photo the ones I let walk. The problem is , my camera is loud and I'm not sure the flash is a good idea , I dont want to spook them. Has anyone ever done this? Do they make a camera that is totally silent?

Congrats on your self-restraint.

Most deer hunters are primarily for the meat, not the bone.
