The quietest bow possible?

I've become obsessed with getting the quitest bow possible. I think I have a good start with a Legacy. I have all the obvious items such as string silencers, stabilizers, limb savers, etc. What other things can you do to get the quitest bow possible?

Hunt the thickets

Add string silencers to your cables. Use a Sim's cable slide. Use the smaller limb savers on your rests, and sights. Shoot without your quiver(if you hunt from a stand take it off). Add a limb saver to the end of your stablizer if there is a bolt there. Shoot a peep sight without a tube(the tube whisels). Those are just a couple suggestions. With the silencers on your cables, you lose speed though.

Buy a longbow.<img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Belle,
Shooting a heavy arrow helped a little with my set-up also. Brute listed everything else to get you started.

Buy a sight and rest with no moving parts.

Do all the above plus. wherever you have metal to metal contact with an accessory and the riser, you should put moleskin between them. Put string leeches on your cable. Once everything is set right where you want it, put the milder thread lock on all your screws and it will keep them from coming loose and rattling. An extra set of limb savers will help some and they weigh almost nothing. When you get done, your bow may be quieter than some longbows, and that will be at almost twice the speed.

JimPic got it right! My Chek-Mate Crusader longbow is unbelievably quiet. I thought all of my other traditional bows were quiet until I got it. Now when I am at the Archery Shop praciticing, the noise of the &quot;quiet&quot; Mathews bows is unbelievable.

As for compounds, the Hoyt Tec series and the Bowtec Patriot.

My bow was very noisy - to me anyway.

I was at the pro shop over the weekend for my annual safety check & had the bow checked out. Seems that all I needed was some wax on my bowstring and a new washer for my stabilizer. I am new to bowhunting and was not aware of how much the wax helps on the bowstring.

Couldn't believe the difference. It was shooting so quietly, the wife thought that I'd bought a new bow.

I guess it's all relative though. Guys at the range thought that the bow was quiet already. :)

old beat up practice arrows will cause a bow to be noisy also.what i like to do is use last years huntin arrows(if theres any left...<img src=icon_smile_shock.gif border=0 align=middle> ) for this years practice and buy new ones to hunt with,at least every second year.

The Saunders Pro Deadly Quiet!!

I bought one last year and am definately impressed! I made the mistake of keeping it on all year for leagues and 3d and wore the rubber stop out pretty quick. No problem , I called Saunders and they had a new and improved rubber stop , so they sent me two extra ones for no charge. I put mine on the week before the season starts just to get a few shots through it. Even if you already have all of the other shock doohickys , you'll notice a difference.

I really don't know where the idea comes from that a longbow or recurve is quieter than these new compounds.Every longbow or recurve that I ever shot or heard was extremely loud compaired to these new bows out today. The traditional equipment is using 600-700 gr arrows and still have a loud twang. So you put rubber bumpers on the string to stop that, along with string silencers.Sounds like the new Icon or Legacy.

Now I'm not against traditional and do it myself from time to time but they are not that quiet.

If you want the quietest setup, the Legacy is a good start.A Muzzy ZE might be a bit quieter. Also, bumping the arrow weight up will help.

Really I think you are getting too obsessed and would venture to say that the bow is extremely quiet as is.

Although I personally hate the feel of the Legacy,I will admit it is quiet. So is my Ultratec and most of the upper end compounds out today.

Once you get your bow as quiet as you can have someone stand between you and your target and shoot an arrow at the target. Of course try not to hit the person standing between you and the target. You will be very surprized how loud the arrow is flying through the air towards the target especially if your using feathers. I guess no matter how quiet your bow is you can't quiet the arrow!!!!

You should use the same safety tactics with a bow that you use with a gun!!!

&quot;Have someone stand between you and your target&quot;<img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle>

If I ever caught my son doing something like that , he'd get a size 13 in his rearend and he would'nt be shooting his bow for the remainder of the year!

Parker1, you're kidding.....ain't ya? If not, that's the most asinine advice and comment I have ever had the displeasure of reading<img src=icon_smile_angry.gif border=0 align=middle>.

I have done something like that, but not to the degree that you seemed to advocate. I have gone around the corner of the house, approximatly 10 yrds away from the bow, and had my dad shoot it at the target. The shot is never taken until I tell him, this insures that no one can walk out into the shooting lane. It is quite often that you would here, &quot;Fire in the hole!&quot; coming from the side of my parents house. From this vantage point, I can accomplish many things.

1. I AM COMPLETELY OUT OF THE LINE OF FIRE.
2. I can hear how loud my bow actually is. It is very loud when standing beside it or shotting it, while it is barely audible from ten yards away.
3. I can get an idea of how my arrow is flying through the air (visually checking the speed, listening to the arrow, etc.)

AT NO TIME AM I OR ANYONE ELSE IN THE LINE OF FIRE. USE YOUR HEAD FOR SOMETHING MORE THAN A HAT RACK, PARKER1, BEFORE SOME ONE GETS HURT.

It's OK parker I been there on this board and at least two of us have a sense of humour and don't take everything literally. I have done the same thing with firing and yes I have the guy stand off ten yards and behind a big tree for safety but the arrow does make some noise during travel.

RE: The quietest bow possible?

I've noticed that arrows do make a lot of noise when flying toward the apple on top of my head.<img src=icon_smile_clown.gif border=0 align=middle> Seriously, my friend has a shed in his back yard and I went around the side of it to hear how loud his bow is and the arrows with an aggressive helical make more noise that those with a straight fletch and offset. I found that to be interesting.

Belle, it sounds like you got your bow pretty quiet. You don't want to make so many changes that you have to completely change your setup. I don't know when your season starts, but it's got to be pretty close.

RE: The quietest bow possible?

TFOX,

The quietness of my longbow came from the compound shooters who were in the shop while I was shooting. THEY could tell a very distinct difference between the compounds being shot and the my longbow. To a man they all said &quot;Man, that sure is a quiet bow!&quot;, or words to that effect.

Insofar as the noiseness of their bows, I could hear that for myself. And I have bad hearing to boot!! As I stated above, most of the guys in the shop shoot Mathews, so I am not comparing the sound to the various Hoyt Tec series of bows or the Bowtec Patriot. I have heard one of the Hoyt Havotecs. The noise level is very similar to my bow, if not ever so slightly greater.
