From what I understand, as long as you don't come in contact with the brain or spinal fluids you will be ok. Who knows....I don't think there is enough research yet to positively say....humans are safe from CWD.

You can get info on CWD from this website which is kept up on the latest info. Go to www.cwd-info.org. Should find answers to most questions there.

You cannot destroy the prion that causes CWD by cooking the meat. It takes a special furnace with extreme temps to destroy them.

The official line is “there are no proven cases “but there are biologist now saying hold the phone. There is no proof that it doesn’t either. I hunt in Mississippi and they are taking a wait and see approach and are not testing this year. Once you read up on this issue it will scare the crap out of you. In Wisconsin they declared a 374 square mile area as a CWD eradication zone and are trying to kill every deer in that area. I talked to a guy who said he had never even heard about CWD before his lease was declared part of the eradication zone. How long will it take to repopulate 374 square miles? If your state is not testing for it you should try to pressure them to start. It takes a deer two years to start showing signs of CWD all that time they can spread it to other deer. They think it spreads by simple contact with other deer, eating or drinking after each other or actual physical contact (like sparing or breeding). Once a deer has it there is no cure and it will kill it. There is no way to test a live deer. They have to kill it and test its brain. It has been spread by private deer herds being purchased form the infected states. The problem is detection. If you wait until deer start dropping dead from CWD that means you have had it for two years and it will be wide spread. Causing a massive response like Wisconsin. And if it is linked with killing humans, how many will die before every state is testing for it?

Welcome to my backyard. They will never kill all the deer in this area. There are too many hunters who will not kill 100% of the population to remove a 3% infection rate. The State and local authorities advise against eating venison from inside the zone. Yes you can wait for a test, but how many will do all the labor and have the storage space until the results come back? That means most will be thrown in the dumpster. On top of that this "zone" would have to remain deer free for at least 5 yrs! Not gonna happen. Bow lisence sales alone are down 34% so far this year. The seasons been open since last Sat. Bow season in the zone will last a little over a month before they start the all out war on Whitetails with guns. They want all the deer removed (read killed) but require you to take a doe first. A doe around here averages just under 2 fawns per year. How many doe do you think a mature buck will breed?
