Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I was out yesterday for about 9 hours in my stand (5:15am-10am & 4:15pm-8:15pm). I stood for all but about 15min and I held my bow for about 80% of the time I stood. After talking to one of my buddies who I hunt with, he converted me from a stand "sitter" to a stand "stander". I now believe that there are many benefits to this:
1.Lower profile in the tree - Blending in with the tree better 2. Less likely to move around when standing...one hand holding my bow and the other in my pocket -- When in the seated position, I think that your more likely to move your arms around and shift your feet...making movements that deer pick up on -- I always seem to see more deer when I stand than when I sit. 3. Less movement is necessary to get the shot off -- just draw and release. It definitely takes more effort but I think it is worth it. Your thoughts??? RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
My hunting buddy and I have been practicing this exact method as long as I can remember. The idea is to always be ready because you never know when or were that old big buck will walk in from. Usually it is from an unaticipated direction and the least amount of movement to get the shot off the better. I can't believe the TV guys that sit there with their bow hung up on their commercial bow hanger and standup and reach out to pick up their bow without ever getting busted. It seems like almost every time I relasx a bit something shows up and then its a real nerve racker to get into a good shooting position without spooking the deer.

A little of both I always stand the first couple of hours with my bow hung just at my hand. In the evening I stand about the last hour I have been busted getting up but only once.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
After being caught with my pants down so to speak, I only sit down to rest. I think you are better off standing, with your bow in your hand, than you are sitting.
|
RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I sit almost the entire time. I may stand the last half hour if there seems to be a lot of movement. If I stand to for too long my back kills me. Getting up to a standing shot position hasn't been a problem so far.
Some things are true whether you believe them or not. |
RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I need to agree with you all its only when I need to sit down do I, legs or back give out. But ill tell you this ive had deer walk to me while sitting on the ground and as they just get past me I stand up and the deer stand there in amazement.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
i think that this stand "stander" idea is pretty good. Never quite thought of it like that before. It's something I'll have to try on opening day (October 15). Yeah it's quite a ways away but that'll give me time to practice my stand "standing" techniques hahaha. However i'll try and we'll see what happens.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I agree that standing is my preference b/c I find my form is better when shooting from standing rather than sitting. But my buddy talked me into practicing my shooting form from the sitting position. Not so as to always shoot from the sitting.........but in case a shot is offered while sitting and to stand would spook.
I split my time between standing 75% of the time and sitting 25% of the time (approximately). During the magic twilight hours of dawn and dusk (you know, those 25 - 35 minutes of partial light when everything seems to stand still and move at the same time) I will always stand. There are 2 advantages to sitting though. #1 is it gives you a chance to relax your muscles so as to be more relaxed when the time for the adrenaline rush comes. #2 You can sometimes gain a new perspective, ya' know.. a different angle of view. Every time you move you risk being spotted, but I have been able to view a deer's head when sitting when otherwise all I could see was legs when standing. Soeetimes I prefer to have the deer's head obscured so they can't see me either, but at other times I need to evaluate the deer for shot decision. All in all, though, I prefer to be standing most of the time, especially when the shot presents itself. |

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I hunt and shoot from the sitting position. I set up all my stands for this position. I try to keep bow in lap with arrow knock and ready, if I see deer or hear before they are in range I slowly move into position, but in sitting position. The overriding disavantage to the sitting position I have experenced is a deer directly below me, you cannot shoot from this position. I normally just wait till they move to a better shooting area. I find that I can hunt longer and quieter.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I'm with bobcat. I position my climber so I will be offered shots from the sitting position (if the deer come from the direction I think they will) with very minimul movement. My bow is in an upright holder right in front of me so there's less movement getting drawed. If I hear or see a deer behind me, the tree I'm in gives cover so I can stand and get into position.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I sit 99.9% of the time, and have never had a problem.I can shoot everywhere except stright behind my tree.I guess it depends on how tired you get and can still shoot.if I stood all the time I could only hunt an hr. in the morning and afternoon. So I sit.
I am not a hunter I am a whitetail population reduction specialest remember keep your back to the sun, your knife sharp, and your powder dry. |
RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I stand about 85% of the time spent in my treestand. I use a bow holster and hold my bow for most of that time too. I can look behind my tree with less movement while standing.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I sit most of the time. Tore the inner ACL in my left knee a few years back and now if I stand on it more than 30 minutes it gets painful. I've had to pass up a couple shots because of it but can usually get to a standing position without being noticed.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I'm a sitter. I haven't lost an opportunity at a deer because I was sittin YET. I have shot them while seated without problem. I like just being out there, being relaxed and enjoying life. If one slips by 'cause I was too lazy or just too relaxed, so be it, Hopefully it won't be ol mossy horns when it happens. I do prefer to shoot while standing, I try to see them or hear them coming way before they are close enough to bust me for moving, although I know it doesn't always work that way.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I have the API Grand Slam Bowhunter and I set the seat up high enough so I can rest my leggs by sort of leaning on the seat section.
In the middle of the day when thing slow down I lower it and sit down to eat and rest for a few hours. As things pick up again in the afternoon I raise it back up and lean on it until dark. It takes very little movement and is well worth the extra confort it provides. SF |
RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
Well I also have the grand slam bow hunter and love it. once you climb you can adjust so the seat has a lazy boy effect, you can set high or low. but I usually sit until I hear movement, I keep my bow so I can easily reach and keep my seat portion of my stand so that I kinda just lean forward and im standing. now with my portable I usually stand most of the time, and sit when i need a lil break. Good luck to all this year

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I stand the first and last hour of hunting. The rest of time I'm sitting on my lazy arse.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I sit and will stand for 5 minutes every 2 hours.....I always slowly stand as soon as I spot a deer. I don't get up quick, it may take several seconds to complete getting up. If the deere are looking my way, I freeze...
|
RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
Most of my time is spent sitting. I have good cover around my stand, and by the way the deer funnel through my area I can get away with it. Most of the time I can see them before they get too close and I can slowly stand. I have had my knees buckle before while standing, from nodding off, and im just more comfortable sitting down. I will stand awhile at first light and a little before sundown.
|
RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I hunt from an API magnum. The seat is up pretty high from the base of the treestand. So when I go to stand up there is very little movement. But I can shoot sitting down just as well as I can shoot standing up. I do whats more comfortable to me. Wear mossy oak break-up and you wont be seen.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I sit most of the time. My bow is in a holder to the left with arrow in whisker and my new quiver holder is to my right, both mounted on my summit bushmaster. When a deer is spotted I slowly get into position. Have not been busted yet. Never caught by suprise.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I Sit 90%. I stand when I need to stretch and/or want to get a different view. I also stand up when I see deer approaching.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I go 50-50. I like to stand the first 1/2 hour and the last 1/2 hour of daylight. I then make sure to hear deer in the distance before I stand again. I have been lucky so far with this technique.

RE: Do You Stand/ Sit in Your Stand ?
I used to use the almost standing seated method and the standing most of the time method, but my knee is funky from years of hockey so I have to sit a lot now. I have shot the my last 7 deer with a bow from the seated position. I see some of the benefits of standing that NJ-Bowhunter and some others mentioned, but I want to bring up some benefits of sitting.
1. Don't get physically tired. I personally get fidgety if I stand too long and my arm gets tired from holding the bow. 2. Human form is broken up. Deer recognize humans as a vertical figure. When sitting that figure is broken up. 3. Different perspective. Someone had mentioned this earlier I believe. Both methods have their merits, so I would say whatever you are comfortable with. I would say to definitely practice both so you can be effective either way. Good luck. |
