Food plot - dilemma on morning hunts
I just recently got permission to hunt 80 acres of new land. The owner has got a 30-acre alfalfa field on it which is great because it is the only plot of food for better than a mile in any direction. As you might guess, there are deer all over this land, which is how I able to get permission to hunt. The landowner claims he sees deer in the field nearly every morning. The plot is located right at the end of the only road leading into the property. The property is land locked by private property and the only way in or out is down a 2-mile road and this road ends right in the alfalfa field. After scouting the property I located, opposite the road, three heavily used trails leading to the field and the owner agreed those were the areas he readily sees deer entering and leaving from. Now to my dilemma, I have no way of entering this property much less get to any of these trails without making my presence known to any deer that may already be in the field. In the afternoon this place will be a hot spot but on morning hunts I risk spooking many of deer that may be in the field and the further I go in the further I push them.
What do you guys think? I may be able to carefully skirt the edges but you don’t ever know where the deer will head and if they would even return. Can this place be anything more than just an evening hunting spot? |

Tough call Toby.
I think I would sleep in and save this spot for late afternoons. 30 acers is a big field but is it worth the chance? Anyone else have a plan? SF Edited by - sprintflyer on 09/14/2002 22:51:13 |

Yeah that too, Moosehead! I hadn't even thought of that. Man, I wish there was a way I could get in there before daylight and cut them off heading back to bed. I hate hunting in the afternoon, at least in the fall.
