Good Shot Or Not? You decide

I was out hunting tonight which is friday. I saw a nice 6 point buck at 20 yds. He heard me as I was sitting in a plum bush and he was walking in a small waterhole to get a drink. He seen me draw back and put his head up to look at me. He was looking towards my direction but couldn't figure out where I was. This is the best shot I had which was a straight shot into his brisket. He was snorting trying to smell me but the wind was the wrong direction. He was looking right at me, should i have put him away or do you think he would have run if i were to stand on my knees for a shot???? I passed up the shot because i thought he would see me and lost him. Was that smart or not??????

Why work when you can hunt???? Heck why work at all!!

shooter,

i think you did the right thing. if you would have moved he would have seen you and you might not see him again. now he will be back and you can get him the next time.

Good decision to pass in my opinion. The chances of making a clean kill were slim at best. Take pride in your decision.

Congrats bud! You just took your first step towards being a seasoned hunter!<img src=icon_smile_approve.gif border=0 align=middle>

If you find yourself questioning the shot , chances are , it's not a good shot to take!

A friend shot a doe at about ten yards; center punched her in the chest. He was walking to his stand and saw her watching him in the brush. She ran across the road he was standing on and said the arrow was buried about half way in her. That deer bled like you were pouring out paint from a can until she ran up a hill. We spent three hours looking for more blood, to no avail. You wouldn’t have believed that the deer had any more blood!
We did two things after that incident. One is we agreed not to ever shoot a deer facing us again and two was that we started training a blood dog. Both of them have helped us out a lot. Later that same year, he shot a real nice 8 point that we would have never found had it not been for the dog. It is not very hard to train one and I would highly recommend it.

Always pass on frontal shots. I passed a real dandy in front of my house a couple years ago because he was quartering sharply towards me. I felt that even a great shot could possibly hit only one lung, and anything less could result in a lost deer. Wait for shots that will give you a high probability of hittng both lungs.

Today's small bucks are tomorrow's trophies.
