Game cam pic... What do you think

Looks like The bucks may be sporting some velvet clad antlers a little earlier than I expected this year in NE Ohio. What do you think?

Here is a zoomed in pic and the origional. Looks like he is growing already to me:)

I thought as you guys did at first, but now that I've looked closer I don't think that it's even a buck. Look at how small that deer is and how skinny the neck is. If it were a buck it would a young buck and no way would it be sporting antlers that thick this early if it's a young buck. I think what we are looking at is the folds of the inner ear that appear to be rounded up because the deer's got its ears back. I could be wrong, but I think we are all going through antler withdrawal.;)

Yup, those look like nubs to me. That could be the key to bigger bucks in the heartlands. If there genetic code has there antlers start growing earlier in the year they would have longer to grow. It makes sense even though there is little that is nutritious this time of year for them to forage on.

I have one too that looks like that, but when my father emails al the pics to me he has to reduce file size so I can't zoom in. I will see if I can post it tonight to put up. The one I have looks like a younger deer too.

Rick,
Try this program. It will shrink the file size down quite small while keeping the photos integrity intact. Thank Justin for passing it along to me last fall.

This is the one I was thinking of. He isn't big, but it really appears that something is there on his head other than pedicles and they look too big to simply be nubs on a button buck. I am not really sure what it is..........

Looks like antlers here, too. But it also looks like his ears, too. [&:]

I am pretty sure both deer have begun growing their 2005 antlers.
I have been fortunate in the past, to see deer during our turkey season which begins in April-- with velvet altlers as long as 6-8" and some had already started growing their G2's. No kidding.

Looks like horns to me. Don't you have the ability to zoom in on the 1200x1600 pic that comes on the Leaf River? I would think it would have more detail to see...........

It looks like antlers starting out to me. It just seems a little early since I saw a buck with a rack standing in a field only 2 or 3 weeks ago. I guess since they don't shed at the same time, they don't start new ones at the same time either.

That is zoomed in. The deer had to have been 10 yards form the cam. I have the pic quality turned down so it will hold more pics. I have slacked and have not bought a memory card for it yet. I will get on it shortly[&:]

When it is time to buy more, they are dirt cheap on Ebay. I got 2 128 cars for around $15 each after shipping and honestly I can't fill them up. I have had around 180 pics at most on them and they aren't even quite half full on high pic quality. I would get 64 ones if you check the camera every day, you should be able to fit around 200 pics at high resolution on one.

It sure looks like the base of some antlers growing. But as early as it is and as skinny as that deer is it seems odd to me.... What look like the base of antlers belonging to a 2 1/2 or 3 1/2 year old buck do not match the facial features and neck of a deer belonging to that age class. But like I said, that does look like new growth.

I have a lot of pics of bucks from the last month and that is a button with nubs that are finally working their way up. I have several pics that are very similar. I also have a couple pics of larger deer that I'll try to dig up. I have a pic from a buddies backyard in KS of a buck that clearly has some age on him starting to sprout. I'll see if I can dig 'em up?

Found it, this pic was taken 3-16 in KS and is certainly NOT a button.

It looks like nubs in velvet to me.

One thing to think about is this. It's possible it's a buck that doesn't have a pair.:D Serious! I dont know the name for it but it happens. My nephew shot a nub buck a few years ago that didn't have any testicles. From what I've read it happens. It could be that the buck in the pic is one of the same who was born last summer and is already sprouting head gear. I've also heard that in this case when they have no testicles their antlers will grow faster and BIGGER because it has no testosterone level and doesn't worry about breeding/sparring etc. so all nutrients go directly into antler growth.

crap........

My host is down. I have another pic of minor nubs, not as big as the ones pictured above but it should be a 2 1/2 year buck this year.
