A tip to protect your treestand from theft
 

I have posted this before but it was long, long ago, in a galaxy far, far away.
If you would like to greatly increase the chance of recovering a stolen stand, I have a suggestion. Engrave the stand with your Driver's license number. This has several advantages:
1) An engraver is cheap, about 5$
2) Very difficult to remove the engraving
3) Easy to trace. Your DL# is easy to remember, and easy for the police to trace back to you.
4) You could conceivably get your stand back without even knowing it is stolen. If your stand is stolen and quickly recovered, the police would contact you via the DL#, without even having a theft report on file.
5) If a warden or cop checks out a hunter who is suspicious, or someone with several stands in there vehicle that appear may be stolen, they will find your DL#. When it lists to a name different than that of the person who possesses it, they will investigate further and contact you.
6) DL# is better than a phone #. It never changes.
7) Better than your name. there can never be 2 people with the same one.
8) Better than Soc. Sec. #. SS# are not traceable.
9) Include your states 2 letter abbreviation and your stand could show up on the other side of the Country and still be traced back to you.
10) If and when you think you located who has your stand, you can tell the police that you can identify for sure that it is yours. When they seek out the suspect, the suspect will claim the stand is his. However, your DL# will quickly identify the real culprit.

P.S. It works for yout T.V.s, snowblowers, VCRs, etc.

Great tip Static. It might not stop the thief from making the effort but once he spots the engraving, perhaps he'll stop and think and leave the stand alone. IF not, at least there's something there tracable.

Great tip - will also have to do on the aluminum frame of my blind.

A couple of idiots took it this spring then drove in on my brother and scared off several turkeys he had working - luckily he stopped them, saw the blind, jumped in the back of the pickup and threw it out after a heated discussion.

Static, Thanks for the tip. I never would have thought of that on my own. I hunt private land and you would think everything is somewhat safe. Its not we have people that wander on to the property even though its posted all over. When you ask some to leave nicely they get downright nasty. Thanks again for the tip...

Good advice. I have my dr. lic. # engraved on almost all my valuables.
1. Guns (there are many places to get this done while being out of sight. I realize that makes it hard for the law enforcement crew to see it , but in the case of guns, a report needs to be made anyway so in the report you can specify the identifying marks).
2. TV's
3. Stereo equip
4. computers
5. fishing equip
6. All Archery epuip
7. tools
8. camping equip
9. mowers and garden and lawn equip

Just about anything that can grow legs and &quot;walk away' can benefit from having that dr. lic. # on it(with the state abbrev too!)

Thanks for the tip. Also I have never had a stand stolen since I started locking them up with Master Lock 5/8 inch steel braided cables. It is almost impossible to cut that big of cable while in a tree. I lock all 6 of my stands up with them and have yet to lose one.

Just another idea, I've never had one stolen yet either., but you could hang a small note on each stand, laminize them to waterproof the note, saying, that you're picture has been taken, so unless you find the deer cam, stealth cam, or what ever camara, you may want to reconcider. Might make a few bad guys leave it well enough alone. But putting your drivers license # on there is pretty good too.
