Guys, I need help......
I am planning to return to college this fall and need to write an essay to submit with my application. I am lucky enough to be able to choose the topic and was thinking I would write it on the benefits of using bow hunters (also hunters in general) as wildlife management tools.
I know this topic may be a hot one and I am probably better off writing about something less controversial but bow hunting is in my blood and I can think of nothing I'd rather write about. So, What I'm looking for are any sort of studies or article about bow hunters (primarily but not exclusively) and the use of us as management tools. Also studies such as the bow wounding study preformed at Camp Ripley back in 95. If you wish to cut and paste or just post links it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Adams |

RE: Guys, I need help......
Adams, I found this website that deals with using hunters as a management tool to control the population. If you click the deer management report link in the middle of the article it opens a 26 page report with alot of statistics on the individual park. They include stats such as forrest damage, plant damage, vehicle accidents etc... It also covers various ways to reduce herd size from non-lethal to lethal as well as stats for those. I hope it helps, it's all I could find that included usefull info.

Thanks guys,
These are exactly what I'm looking for. I know I'm heading out on a limb by writing this (I live in a blue state) and these give the factual information that I need to make a convincing argument. Please keep them coming:) |

This kid sites some sources.
http://www.bowhunting.net/emagazine/...anMc1.html#top I've read some of T. Rosevelt's writings. Interesting. It might be easier to do it on hunting with a bowhunter section. Hunting's the tool. Bowhunting is just one part of it. http://www.ubofpa.org/legislative-update.html |
RE: Guys, I need help......
Hey adams...I dont have any sources at this moment, but I could, I will get back to you.
I was wondering where you are going to college...I am at Umaine studying forestry, just thought it was cool to see a fello mainer on the board! |
RE: Guys, I need help......
Sorry adams, I love your commitment but do not write about hunting. I would say the samething for any other subject. You need to write about why you are going to college and what degree you plan to achieve.
I have a EE Degree from a darn good university known for EE. I sent a letter with my application explaining why I was pursueing it and pointing out my background. I got my admission letter back with in two weeks. My friends waited for two months. Hunting is your pasion, your degree and job allow you to enjoy it. Good luck, |

You make a good point Fieldmouse but that question is already part of the application process. That was good advice though.
Mehuntalot, I’m in Southern York co and will hopefully be attending UNH. I'm a black bear fan at heart but the university offers the exact courses I was looking for and it's conveniently close to home. Are you at UMO? Everyone else, Thanks for the references. What I've read sofar is packed full of facts and will greatly help me to write my essay. Thanks again!:) |
RE: Guys, I need help......
yeh I am at UMO...nice place but kinda far away
I am actually from windham, so I am not too far away from you at all. I do a lot of bowhunting in the expanded season in cumberland, falmouth, westbrook with moderate success...and I got out quite a bit up here with great success seeing animals, but not shooting I kept an eye on the tournament all throughout the fall and plan on joining in on the action for next year |

I wish you luck adams. Just remember the college motto:
You can always retake a class but you can never relive a party.[8D] |
RE: Guys, I need help......
lol....exactly
but you can sure try! :D |

If it is an admissions essay then the representative who is going to read your piece is not looking at how you write, he is looking to see what makes you tick. Since bowhunting makes your blood flow, focus on that rather than the management stuff that you or anyone else can find on the internet. The rep can find that stuff there too.
Tell that person what makes the sport sepcial to you, what you get out of it, what gets the juices going. You are selling you and UNH is a school that accepts or rejects based on more than test scores and school grades. They actually read teacher and other letters of recommendation and they value your writing in the process as well. The admissions people are much more interested in you and how you will fit in on campus that on your writing. They can see how you write from your grades and from your test scores. Oh yeah, I'm a high school guidance counselor/supervisor. Greg |
RE: Guys, I need help......
Adams,
I wrote a paper similar to this when I was in school. It was a case study about deer management for Cranes Beach reservation in Ipswich Ma (Angle Island off CA too). Back in the mid-80s (or thereabouts), anti-hunting groups and F&G fought over how to handle the over population. Everything from hunting, relocation, birth control ... was discussed in public and reported on by the Boston Globe. The globe has a ton of articles on it for reference. |
RE: Guys, I need help......
Thanks OAM, I'll do a google search to shee if I can get some more specifics.
I appreciate you help and thanks for logging in and joining us.:) |
