Stuipid Corn!!!!!

It was the beging of bow season and it was my first time really ever going out and me and my dad and brother (bigBuck90) were all hunting and they werein seperate part of the woods and i was being bored siting there doing nothing and all of a sudden a spike had popped out with a young doe so i pulled back my mathews mustang and waited and then he was broadside about 12 yrds. so i shot and hit him right there in the heart so as i waited for a good 10 mins i climbed down and traced the spike and then ran straight into the cornfield with the corn field still up so tthat was trouble tring to find that deer and still no luck so next time im going to have to drop it in his tracks.

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

If your wanting to drop them in their tracks then you have to trade your Mathews in for a Remington. Hit them in the base of the neck, they will be dead before you hear the "BOOM".

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

I fail to see how the corn is to blame here? A decent tracking job would have recovered a heart shot deer 12 yards away and broadside within 30 minutes.
You're leaving something out of the story.

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

Tracking skills are as important as shooting skills. Never give up until you've exausted all the tracking effort you can get.Have you checked the corn since it's been picked? Maybe the hit wasn't as good as you thought. Never start tracking before 1/2 hr, but an hour would be better.

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

Hazcon7: I agree......shouldnt a heart shot from that distance kill a deer fairly quickly.......plus if he's in the corn the tracks should be somewhat evident......plus theres lots of corn for the blood to rub or spray onto......anyways there must be more to it.........not calling you a liar...but you must have left something out

When you drop one "in his tracks", lemme know. I've only done it a couple times, with a .270!

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

You should be ashamed of yourself for not looking in the cornfield. I know from experience that a heart shot deer can go at least 200 yards without any blood on the ground except for the initial hit. If you rip the ole blood pumper apart theres nothing left to pump the blood out of the hole. Thats why you should go for the lungs, they will leave a lot better trail. But if you knrw it went into the corn you are one lazy person to not go looking.

I did look in the cornfield for a couple hours till it got dark and i meant im going to drop my next deer in his tracks next time

i droped two in their tracks this year . 1st one was about 20 yards and my arrow hit a little twig and went right in at base of neck . 2nd one was about 6 yards right in the boileroom dropped and slid about 10 feet down the snowy hill ended up about 8 feet from my stand

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

I have found that if a deer is not tracked for 30 min and the hit was good corn may make tracking easyer .
The blood will be on the corn stalk and leaves ,wound hig .
Plus the blood on the ground

Sorry for calling you lazy, I misread your post, I didn't realize you looked in the corn.

If you can't find a deer you shot with a sharp broadhead in the heart, it's not the corns fault.

Charlie P has just much of a say in this topic as you and I. Just so you know, Charlie P threw in a good point. You would be wise if you listened to his comment.

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

Charlie P's so right. More often than not, it seems like people want to blame everything but the actual reason - a bad shot or poor effort of recovery. If you don't want to hear peoples opinions, don't post..... especially one blaming corn. I would love to have a cornfield nearby.

Why didn't you go back the next day and look? And how exactly, are you going to drop it in its tracks next time?

I hunt around corn all the time. I have had no problem tracking a deer with a well placed shot through it. Blood sticks out like a sore thumb on corn leaves.

And also, how do you know you shot him through the heart? You never found him to be sure. Did you video the hit, and review the shot? Just curious.

For starters I agree 100% with CharlieP. Truer words have never been spoken.

i shot and hit him right there in the heart
IMO that's a pretty bold statement without a recovered animal and an autospy. But for argument sake let's say you did put one through the boilerroom. A systematic grid search and a bit more time and effort on your part likely would have yeilded a recovered animal. If you know your tracking skills are still developing and you're hunting next to cornfields you may want to consider a string tracker or similar type device.

extreme1 03-14-2005 09:34 AM

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

Sorry you never recovered your spike. You did have dad and your big brother help out with the tracking? I understand that from the post they were hunting with you from different parts of the woods.
I am also curious as to how long you waited to go track your deer.Being your first one,you were probably all pumped up and the addrenalin running and just way to excited to sit for any longer then 5 min,am I right?
I truley think If you hit him right in the heart, waited a minimum of half hour and got dad and big brother, you probably would have found him.I have never heard of a deer to get shot in the heart,by gun or bow to travel anymore then 200 yards and thats still pushing it.
Good luck with the tracking job next time, get help from friends and family if need be,sometimes the more the merrier.
And congrats on the 2 does:)

charlie p how bout you stay out of it.
How about I don't ? Sorry if you can't take the truth. You hit a deer in the heart with a sharp broadhead,Stevie Wonder should have been able to find it.

Been bowhunting along time and I've heard the I hit it right in the heart but didn't recover it way too many times.

Good luck dropping deer in their tracks with a bow. Try developing some basic tracking skills before you hunt.[:'(]

What did your deer do right after you shot it.

Did you bother to pay attention to where it entered the corn?

Ever find the arrow?

If you did really hit the deer in the heart , it died real quick and didn't travel far.

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

I'm still trying to figure out how it's the corns fault.[:-]

IMO a cornfield is one of the easiest places to track a deer. Blood stands out like a sore thumb. If you happen to lose a bloodtrail grid searching rows of corn is as easy as it gets. A lot easier then climbing over acres of brush and thickets anyway.
If the deer was hit in the heart and ran into the cornfield, he is dead in the cornfield.

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

I'd walk up and down every row of a corn in that field if I had to if I was certian my deer was laying dead in it.. Also in WNY there is a group called Deer Search. They are a group of outdoorsmen dedicated to finding wounded animals. They often come in with a bloodhound and help you find the animal. There meant to be used as a last resort. Fortunately I never had to use them. The major point I think everyone is trying to make is that you should totally exhaust yourself trying to find the animal. They gave their life for your sporting enjoyment, you owe them at least that much, if not more. If it gets to dark, get flash lights, if its getting to late and your exhausted, come back the next morning with a couple of friends. I not trying to say you didn't make an effort I am sure you did, but you shouldn't blame the corn for not finding the deer. Maybe the deer moved and it hit the shoulder not the heart as you thought. Well I hope it doesn't happen to you again. Good luck.

sorry to hear about you losing a deer tough luck. next time come back the next morning and look with a few friends. maybe invest in a tracking dog. better luck next time

RE: Stuipid Corn!!!!!

Just because you can't see deep into the corn doesn't mean you shouldn't be able to track a deer. All that standing corn is just something for them to rub blood off on.
