Earn-A-Buck

This is a continuation of the thread from NJ Opening Day:

No question I am seeing more bucks this year than I did last year. Plenty of healthy deer walking around. The fact that I had to pass up two bucks to fill my doe quota was actually a great thing overall.

It was as exciting allowing the buck to continue while i waited for (and bagged) my doe.

Does PA have this program yet?

Congrates on the doe!

I like the sounds of the EARN-A-BUCK program. I don't see PA adopting that type of management anytime soon....though I would like to see it. With the seemingly overwhelming changes that have taken place here in PA in the last couple years it is likely that a program like EARN-A-BUCK would be well suited to thin out the does. But, with a million hunters it just isn't possible to do the way current doe regs are set(by county). When/if the PGC ever does anything with management areas it could work, but I'm not holding my breath.

Good luck tagging a buck!

That is weird, I just mentioned this in another thread, I would love to see Va. do something like this.

How would you like to have your DNR tell you to kill every deer in the woods(CWD), then tell you its earn a buck? Don't make sense to me but they are. Congrats on your doe, hope your buck is a good one.

In my woods, I'm seeing many more deer in general. I had to pass on a 4 pointer that gave me a picture perfect 5 yard boadside shot. It was thrilling but man was I tempted to break the rules. I missed a shot at my required doe today.

My coworker tells me that PA has a buck requirement this year. It must be a 6 pointer or better. I prefer the NJ doe first rule over that 6 point restriction.

fredbearfan, actually in certain zones in NJ there is a point restriction of 3 or more points on one side. So, you have to shoot your doe, register it to get the buck tag, then pass on all the forks and spikers to get your buck. I tell you what though, we've got some big boys on all the properties we hunt now. With the bucks I've seen while scouting and so far in this young season, I don't want to shoot those little guys.

Earn-A-Buck is a great management tool. I wish other states would adopt it.
