Older PSE nova question
A buddy of mine has a roughly 6 year old PSE nova 55-70lb bow. It has a sticker on it that states it should not shoot an arrow weighing less than 440 grains. This sounds excessive to me. Do you think this might refer to aluminum shafts only as carbons are so much lighter? Also he was wondering what speed it shoots roughly. anybody want to guess at a Nova set at 60lbs with a 29" draw, 29" arrows (440 grs), peep, kisser. string loop?

RE: Older PSE nova question
I can't even guess on the speed, but the warning label is probably a generic warning. For instance, a bow set at 70 lbs must have a heavier arrow than one set at 55 lbs. Also, a 26" draw can get away with a much lighter arrow than someone with a 31" draw length. The sticker is probably put on all their bows, regardless of the draw weight or draw length. 440 grains is certainly not a super heavy arrow, but I wouldn't doubt that when shooting at the lower draw weight and draw length, that you could safely go lighter. I would personally not go below 6 grains per pound in any circumstance.

With that short of a dl it is pretty dificult to get a 440g arrow with a carbon. I also believe it is a generic sticker. My old Thunderflight has a sticker that says 420g as well as my new firestorm. That's 6g per lb @ 70lb of pull. It would appear that the nove was rated for slightly more then 6g per lb. It actually works out to be 6.29g per lb @70lbs(slightly above average).

Yes it should be based on grains per lbs of draw wt. You're probably fine as low as 5 gr/lb, but 6gr/lb would be better. I have a 2002 Nova with AC and I believe it says 6gr/lb. Those Novas come with a number of different cam options so it's hard to say the speed without knowing which cam. I would guess you're looking at about 230 fps with a 440 grain arrow, base on my AC.
