I didn't know those were still around anymore. I haven't seen them in a long time.

I had a friend try one of those and he said its alright for close shots but for far ones its bad. He put a long shot on a doe and when the arrow spun the nylon made big loops and got caught on a tree.[&:]

Many years ago I saw a video, (I think it was Dan Fitzgerald), where a nice buck was arrowed from the ground with one of these string trackers. The deer ran off and the line payed out kinda like a fishing reel. They showed the "tracking" job that followed... through the woods, right to the downed deer. Personally I wouldn't want one, but it was neat to see it in action.

So, lemme get this straight. You shoout your deer, the arrow passes thru with the string, then when the deer runs off it does so dragging your arrow thru the woods?

Correct, but when these were first introduced to the market pass through shots were not the norm like they are now. Generally both the arrow and string stayed in the deer.

I used just the string a couple years ago on a Canada bear hunt. After I shot the bear WITHOUT useing the tracker. I tied the string to the stand and started tracking. I let the spool of string play out as I walked. It makes for a very easy return to the stand and it let the guide know which way I went when he returned.
