3 blade vs 4 blade
 

I have always shot 3 blade muzzys but I am thinking about going to 4 blade next time. what are some good points and some bad of each.

i recently had a topic on this.. you can search for it.. they should fly about the same, more cutting area with the 4 blades. a good shot, and either is just as leathal as the next..

with a 4 you get a little extra cutting diameter. to get an idea of what a change an extra blade can add is to think of a tunnel & then picture a 2 blade going through that tunnel...you will begin to see that you only cut a path that splits the tunnel in half. with a 3 blade you get 3 parts, and with a 4 you cut the tunnel in 4 sections. If you really want to blow a hole through something look at Golden Keys Deadhead 6 blade! Now that thing will split the tunnel into 6 sections and you will have a ton of damage.

I shoot Muzzy 3-blades. Killed deer with no problem.

Not trying to start anything here, but.....

When I shoot a deer, I'm trying to go for a double lung hit. The lungs collapse just as well with a 3 as a four or a 2 blade for that matter. Like a balloon. Does it pop any louder if you shoot it with a needle or a 4 blade broadhead. Still deflated just the same.
Not so much a statement of fact, but more of a theory.

Why 3 blades for me...habit I guess. Nore more, no less.

I've used both 3 and 4 blade Muzzys and like them both. I use the 4 blade 130 grain (2219 arrow) and 3 blade 100 grain (2314 arrow). The only reason I use both is so that I know at a glance which arrow I'm grabbing as I go out the door.

This season I'm using 4 blades and 2219's.

I use 4-blade muzzy's and have had no regrets. A couple years ago I tried spitfires and wasen't displeased but I have more confidence with muzzy's. I thought about trying out the g-5's but haven't yet.

Me, I use the 4 blade Muzzys. I have looked at and have a set of the 75 grain 3 blade but I really like the interlock system on the 4 blades better myself. Not that the 3 blade system is bad but I have not had a blade failure on the 4 blade and don't see how one could ever occur. The 90% bend on the three blade system to me is a possible point of failure. Again IT HAS NOT HAPPENED TO ME just a concern of mine. I'll stick to my 4 blades for the large game and use the 3 blades for chucks and 'yotes and the like!

Good article, John.

There is another good read in the October issue of 'Bow and Arrow Hunting' magazine dealing with the same thing John's talking about. It's got some good illustrations to go with the words to make the concept more understandable. It is all background info for the very best magazine broadhead test I've ever seen. In addition to John's info, I contend that a 4 blade leaves a larger entrance and exit hole for a given cutting diameter than a 2 and three blade. On all of the animals I have shot w/ a four blade there is literally a hole where the hide has been pulled away after the BH has passed. With the 3 and 2 blades I usually see flaps of skin over the wound. Not sure that that has much sigificance but I believe it makes for an easier bloodtrail.

CG's right!
The four blade will cut a square, whereas the three blade will cut a triangle. The square, although it appears smaller, actually has a larger area than the larger triangle. Larger hole = quicker blood and air loss. The smaller profile of the four blade should fly better, too. I always avoided using them, thinking they were too small, until I found this out. Now I'm looking forward to using them this year.

All this extra size is great....as long as you aren't giving up penetration. In MY book, 2 smaller holes are better than 1 big one. That goes double if you actually have to do a blood trail. When shot from a tree stand, if you don't get an exit wound, you might not get a very good trail (on the other hand, you might). This seems to be a reason the 4 blade heads are normally quite smaller than 3 blade heads. (1" vs. 1 3/16").
That said, I'm going 1/2 way. a LITTLE smaller head (1 1/8") but still 4 blades. (just cuz the ones I'm getting don't come in 3 blades)
